Ants in my raised bed…I was planting yesterday and disturbed a colony of small/tiny black ants. Garlic grows in the south half of that bed and I was going to plant shallots and leeks in the north half. Ants everywhere…on my arms, on my feet and legs. What can I use to encourage them to relocate?

What can I use to encourage them to relocate? I make a slurry in the blender of orange peels and water. Disturb the bed and pour over the top. Sometimes but not often it will take a second application.

I'm envious of you folks that have it growing like a "weed". Have you ever grown it specifically from domesticated seed? The leaves are larger & the flavor is supposed to be very nice.

breezygardener I've sown patches of seed several times, but only from seed suppliers by mail. Never able to get it established, even letting it go to seed. Purslane doesn't seem to be that common in my area, might be the heat and humidity. But me and my Grand-daughter sure like it (she graduated high school today!). I let her pick some when she was four, and every year since she asks me if I've planted "Leaves", as she's always called purslane. That peppery lemony-tart flavor is wonderful in salads.

I finally figured out the tenacious viny weeds I have been struggling to get rid of are wild grape vines and just how difficult it is to eliminate them. Anyone else dealing with these pugnacious creepers? www.accentnatural.com/eradicating-wild-grape-vine/

alpacasock,I have those in our woods. I don't bother with those, but I do get them creeping up the fence around my garden. I just pull them out or cut them down. There's not that many, but I agree, they are a pain in the butt.

What can I use to encourage them to relocate? Try using some diatomaceous earth around the plants you're trying to protect - it won't hurt the ants but it'll keep them from wanting to hang out in the bed. You could also fill the bed/South half with garlic-y goodness to make it even less hospitable to the majority of the ant colony.

I have been having a real aphid problem this year. Peppers had them, spinach had to be pulled they were so bad. Chard has some too I noticed the other day. Today I was watering the plants on the deck and what do I see? Little Ladybug larvae on one of the pepper plants. Thanks Mother.

Saw the first JB's of the season. On potatoes and asparagus ferns. Opposite side of the garden from beans. I'm sure they will find their way......

I saw something that didn't look good on some tomatoes today, when I went out just to check. I couldn't really tell what it was, but I hope this constant moisture does not bring on those fungus based diseases, that haven't been seen yet, due to the drought.

So,I've said I have an aphid infestation. Milkweed is covered in them. Today I see a ladybug on the milkweed, yay, this is good. I look over to the other side of the bed where there are more plants and one is broken and laying and a few leaves are broken off. On two of the leaves are what I think are ladybug eggs. They look just like the pictures. Question is, will the eggs survive on these leaves, or are the eggs goners? I brought them onto the deck and put the stems in a cup of water. I googled it, but it only talked about when they are larvae.

So much for that. Went out this morning to look at eggs and they are all gone. Big old Daddy Long Legs spider sitting there on the leaf where the eggs were. Oh well, Mother Nature at her best I guess.

Big old Daddy Long Legs spider sitting there on the leaf where the eggs were. If your Daddy Long Legs "spider" is a harvestman, you will be glad to know that besides scaveging dead insects, debris and eggs, they also eat small prey like APHIDS. Even if they ate future lady bugs, they will fill in for them on aphid hunting, so it's OK.
