Link to previous Sept goals thread: organicgroup.freeforums.net/thread/5490/garden-goals-septemberI only have one goal for October (though many more things need doing) and that is to totally clean and organize the side yard. This is the part of the property where I grow the things in pots, store pots, trays, and netting etc, have the propagation tables, mix potting soil, and fall down many experimental rabbit holes. And I need to get it in order before next season's games begin. I started yesterday and that included descaling a whole stack of pony packs for transplants. Today was spreading some ground fabric to prevent weeds, and consolidating and moistening old potting mix. A good start.

Yes - October is when I "try" (ha ha) to clean up & organize my deck garden - at least to the point where any Halloween decorations don't look like part of the trash - lol!

My plans are to finish harvesting (keep forgetting those darn jicama) and start cleaning beds and then paths. Nothing else! From previous years, the beans will keep producing until a hard frost so probably not a lot of clearing beds until then.

Will keep harvesting chiles and tomatoes and basil
Harvest the sugar pie pumpkins
Start cleaning the garden beds as harvesting finishes
Dead head flowers as I can (leaving sunflower and echinacea seed heads for the birds)
Feed beds and then layer with crushed leaves, topped with pine straw
Plant garlic
Wait for First Frost and scramble to get the last items harvested.

Clear plants as they die, keep on harvesting and maybe plant a few more radishes and some quick greens, like some spinach and others. Also plant garlic at the end of the month. Can't do much more as surgery on Friday (outpatient) will keep me from lifting for a week and, according to what I was told, I may be more tired for around three weeks. We'll see. Maybe granddaughter will help with garlic like she did when she was little.

Put the garlic in, of course, about the third week of the month. Harvest the remaining peppers, beans and okra, letting some the okra pods stick around for seed.

Clean up what's left of 2022 and prepare for 2023.
Need to prep onion bed for spring. Add some compost and cover with leaves. Eventually will have to pull green beans, but they are still producing.
Wish I could figure out how to keep the second coming of the cilantro. It's so beautiful and bushy. Actually better than the spring crop. Will eventually start raking leaves to put over all the beds. Right now the leaves are still on the trees.

Continue with clean up. Get garlic in by the end of the month. I'm leaving the garden fences and marigolds around the front edge for leaf control. Without the fences, the leaves blow in and they blow out, so it's always a leaf chase.

Refresh the herb beds, weed, plant seeds for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and snap peas. Weed, clean the raised beds at Mom's, turn compost, direct sow carrots, weed.

Still have leeks, kale and a few beets to harvest, but October has pretty much been a no-gardening month.

Done here except for spreading around mulched leaves.

Still need to harvest those leeks and looks like there's some kale now as well. Did get the area cleared for the greenhouse, but still lots of smoothing and removing tree roots to do.
