ahntjudy, me too. I brought it home, chopped it and mixed with birdseed, shaped it in to balls and parked them on the picnic table. Copper, our Golden Retriever, loved them. it never crossed my mind….

There was a study done at UCLA on Walmart and how their strategic business practices eliminated competition in vibrant areas and then abandoning stores. Hard to believe that they are one the largest employers nationally. They attempted to put a superstore in my town over a decade ago..and were denied. The store by comparison to those in other areas is quite modest. Local leaders were afraid that the 6 grocery stores would fail after being very good neighbors for lifetimes. We did lose 1 independent store.

We have five grocery stores in our town - Martin's, Weis, Safeway, Aldi, & Lidl. Six, if you include our Walmart. Walmart was here first, & yet the others still came in afterwards & haven't suffered at all. They all carry different stuff at different price points, & everyone seems to have gotten along just fine over quite a few years now.
Frankly, I don't agree at all that Walmart is king of all evil in the supermarket wars. As I said - ours was here first, employs a LOT of people - some of whom have been with them for 20 years or more - & also contributes a LOT to the community with regards to local charities as well as our local food pantry, unlike some of the other markets.

When I moved to McHenry, there was a small Walmart. Loved that store. Not real big, I knew where everything was, I knew their prices. In a few years, they closed it down and built a SuperWalmart. Absolutely hate that store. It's so big and it always seems dirty and messy. I very seldom go in there. There is a little family owned grocery store that I go to for the deli, otherwise it's Aldi or Meijer for me.

In my immediate area, we have three Walmart superstores, four Wegmans grocery stores, four Tops grocery stores, Three Aldis, Niagara County Produce, three Federal Butcher shops, a BJs, and a Sam's Club. All are busy stores, inventory is not too bad, prices are higher than they should be, but you can shop around and get good deals. We usually hit three or four stores on our shopping 'loop' and are satisfied that we didn't overpay. I don't forsee any real problems in the future, at least nothing that would prompt me to hole up in a bomb shelter with my food and a machine gun.

The town I bank in, which is also in the county I grew up in, is down to a Shop N Save and a Walmart. A few years ago there was two others including a Kroger. I forgot to mention there's a relatively new Shop N Save in the town we shop in but I seldom go there unless there's a really good sale because the prices are so high. The small independent grocery store nearby is extremely overpriced and you really have to watch expiration dates as they've been known to leave stuff on the shelves or in the cases way too long. I actually refuse to buy milk there as we've returned too many gallons within the sell-by date that were already soured. Ironically that's the best location to buy meat as it's freshly cut and they run bulk sales often. Of course with the meat you really have to watch dates too. If I'm in a pinch for milk, I'll either buy It from Family Dollar or the convenience store down the road. It's high but much cheaper than the 20-30 mile trip to town. Actually with the new Family Dollar/Dollar Tree and a hardware store in our community we can pretty well survive without going into town, if our wallets can take the shock of the latter.

they've been known to leave stuff on the shelves or in the cases way too long. The closest Meijer's does this. Some years ago I found several packages of some type of OTC "med", perhaps a nasal spray or something similar. I took all of them to the customer service area and reported the past due viability. A few weeks or so later I checked the stock, just out of curiosity. There were either more from the inventory or the ones I turned in were recycled. So there still were out or date meds on the shelf. I don't recall if I tried to find out where to report this.

Went to Superstore yesterday for staples such as baking powder, baking soda, cocoa. There was a sign up in the produce department stating that was now a shortage of ALL different types of lettuce and to shop accordingly. It was $3.97 for a scabby head of lettuce.
I was under the impression that we had a thriving hothouse operation going here in B.C. I see tomatoes, cukes, peppers and eggplants at Costco, but nowhere else.
I am now ramping up my sprouting efforts. Have always done Sandwich Booster as we eat a lot of sandwiches and enjoy sprouts in them. My next endeavour is going to be Mung bean sprouts. Have avoided them because the chief source of seeds is China (trying to avoid), but seeing people rummaging with their hands through the bins of bulk bean sprouts just leaves me cold.
Does anyone else sprout? Tell me some of your hits or misses-am really interested in exploring this facet of food production.

Does anyone else sprout? Tell me some of your hits or misses-am really interested in exploring this facet of food production. I've sprouted mung beans in jars, and years ago, alphafa, and perhaps a couple of others. For safety, these days I would only sprout things (whole seeds with seed coats) that would be cooked. I think microgreens however are a better, safer way to go if you want things fresh for sandwiches and salads. Only the shoots are clipped and eaten. My two favorites are sunflowers and peashoots. Radishes are another fast, successful one, but too spicy for me. There are several threads here on microgreens, and many, many videos on YouTube. Not only are microgreens good, growing them is fun!

madamezil I'd "shop accordingly" for that overpriced lettuce - I'd let it rot in their produce section! I do some sprouting, of various legumes, usually just for putting in soups or curries. I have sprouted red chori beans, black eyed peas, chickpeas, and a few other Indian legumes, besides the usual mung beans. I have also sprouted fenugreek seeds - a spice that is actually a legume, and the leaves are also used, both fresh and dried, and the sprouts are sort of a substitute for fresh, if they are unavailable fresh. BTW, if you have an Indian grocery nearby, you'll find mung beans there, that are not from China. And probably cheaper than anywhere else, in large bags! I use mung beans more in many other dishes, besides sprouts.

Besides mung and alfalfa, I sprout lentils. Sprout them until the sprout is about the same size as the seed or just a little bigger. They are good raw or even better (I think) when given a quick stir fry. They develop a nice 'nutlike' flavor.

pepperhead212, Thanks for the heads up re: Indian grocery. We are hugely ethnically diverse here in Vancouver. Our local Walmart has grocery aisles for just about every ethnicity-Southeast Asian, Filipino, Arabic, Caribbean etc. so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find something and probably a lot cheaper. ahntjudy, Those lentils sound good. I will definitely give them a try. We are fond of Vietnamese noodle bowls, so I'd like to incorporate sprouts into them.

Went to Costco today, and they were limiting eggs to two packages (2 dozen each package). I'd seen a report that in the UK eggs were limited there because of bird flu. Must be the same here.
Everything else looked ok. Well, except for nuts. They did not have sliced almonds, but then if I think back over the years, they don't always have everything. The store was very crowded and people's carts were very full. Probably just trying to avoid the TG and holiday rush. There were a number of people wearing masks, but most weren't. It's getting so mask wearers seem to have a sense of knowing camaraderie - us against the world, lol.

I made a quick run to the regular grocery today. One thing I wanted was one carrot for a particular TG dish. Holy cow! Loose carrots were 99 cents/pound and looked like heck. Small, gnarled, broken culls. They looked like what I imagine a large bag of horse carrots might look. I've never seen such bad looking roots and I was shocked. I could not find one I would use, so I passed.
The rest of the produce looked pretty good.
