I went shopping early this holiday morning at my favorite regular grocery. As I was checking out the meats, a meat guy walked past and I complimented him re how good the meat counter looked - as in fully stocked with nice cuts. He replied "We're getting there.". I assumed he meant to pre-Covid levels of stocking.

I don't know about shortages, but prices in just the past month have now gone through the roof!!
One of our local markets had their "family packs" (a little over 5#) of chicken wings on sale for $1.99/#, so Mr. Breezy picked up a pack. The original price was $3.67/#, making original total price $19+!!!! For chicken wings!! I could easily get four whole chickens for that. I remember "back in the day" when local butchers would give my parents sacks of chicken wings FOR FREE. Nobody ate them back then - they were used to make chicken stock or used for crabbing bait. Now they're a premium item.
In addition, I just went to buy my cat's necessary dry food (he has some serious digestive issues & does best on a specific food), & found that a 7# bag - in just ONE month's time - has jumped from $18/bag to $26/bag!!!! In one month.
SIGH.

I agreed to make four pies for a dinner our organization is hosting next week simply because the majority of our members are older and experiencing health issues. I thought about making a couple of pecan pies, but after seeing the price of pecans, I quickly changed my mind. Once I factored in the other ingredients I realized I would have over $20 in two pies. Nope. Nope. Nope.

I wanted to get a piece of salt pork today but when I saw the price figured to $7.36/lb., I also said "Nope."

emmsmommy, probably a good choice about the pecan pies…might be a choking hazard for those older folks. Pumpkin pie sounds kinda good. And it transports easily.

binnylou, my mom always makes a double -layered pumpkin pie and many of the others have their own specialties. I'm just trying to do something different, plus the uncut pies left at the end are always auctioned off. Thinking along the lines of a cheesecake (pumpkin cheesecake would be good) and maybe experimenting with a caramel apple pie. I won't be baking until the weekend so hopefully I'll come up with something by then.

gianna , I used to make those pies from apple crackers! And they were good. I also used to make plum pies; they were even better than the Ritz apples pies. I haven't baked a pie in years though. I've given up on buying meat; the prices are outrageous. And with so many basic necessities rising in price, pies have become a luxury. I do enjoy pies though - perhaps when prices eventually fall I'll make some again.

gianna,I remember that recipe, but I've never made it. Does it really taste like apple pie? Anyone ever make it?

gianna, datgirl, I've tested the mock apple pie and it was actually pretty good. Actually had the opportunity to try vinegar pie last week and while it wasn't bad, I'm not sure people would eat it if they knew what it was. desertwoman, no pears and it's impossible to find good pears at the grocery store. I did buy a nice looking bag of apples though. Pear pie does sound really good though.

That's a new one on me. I like vinegar, and I'd be inclined to try it. What's it like?

Wheelgarden, it's supposed to be similar to lemon but I didn't think so. It was a custard-like pie and wasn't bad. My mom made one a few years ago and I think she used regular cider vinegar and it was entirely too sour. The one I tried last week used ACV. I snapped a picture of the recipe but it's on my phone and I know I'll never get it to upload right now. I think there may be a recipe video as well. Let me go search and I'll add a link if there is. Recipe starts at 6:34 and is actually in the video description.

it's impossible to find good pears at the grocery store Actually, since pears ripen best off the tree, supermarket pears actually turn out pretty darn good. You have to buy them a goodly amount ahead of time & keep an eye on them until they just seem to be starting to soften right around the stem area. Pears are actually one of the few fruits where it pays to buy them rock-hard. If they're soft all over when you buy them, they're past their prime.

breezygardener, by the time the rock-hard pears start to ripen, the fruit gnats start to arrive so not worth the bother to me. I do miss the old pear trees at my parent's and great-grandparent's that died many, many years ago.
