I'm trying to remember how many droughts I lived thru in the 47 yrs I lived there - cant remember really, not a ton. I do remember tho, one just becomes a water conservationist by default, it just gets into your lifestyle, and that's it. I still practice all that here.

That's such a good point Red. Conserving water, like any other healthy action, can be a lifestyle and not just done in an acute situation.
I don't even think about how I use water, what foods I eat, exercising, relaxing, etc. It's just what I do.

My water conservation style came into being after a visit to Columbia in the '70's...up until then I really had not been conscious of how wasteful I was as an American..as an adult..my home has a well..that will go dry if you are not careful..so we use the timer for showers..cups to brush our teeth...and careful with the flushes.

We are really working on being more water wise. We can only water twice per week and only 15 minutes each time. We are very careful and makes me cringe when I think how wasteful we have been in the past.

Karen, can you send some rain to riverside? Thank you I try to save as much water as I can. I have rain water stored, that I use to water the yard, quick showers (still very thorough though haha), I turn the water off when I take more than a few seconds, and I never use water to wash the concrete. That's what a broom is for. It bugs me because I washed my truck for the first time since I bought it last September. My snobby aunt was there and said "you shouldn't wash your truck, we're in a drought!" Ugh I was pissed. It was literally the FIRST time I washed it since September. And live on a dirt road! So you can imagine how filthy it got. I just told her "I save rainwater, so it all equals out!" Plus being on septic, even water that goes down my drain goes back into the ground. All my toilets are lo flo. Shower heads and faucets are lo flo/aerated. The water usage here is usually about $25 a month, with only $2 or so actually being water used! I would LOVE it if it rained continuously for a few weeks. Straight!

When we have been in drought situations, I kept a bucket in the shower and when we were running the water to warm it up, we collected that water. I think that we each got about 2 gallons per day and then I dumped it onto shrubs near the house.

We used to be able to wash our vehicles at home, but no more. We go to the inexpensive wand car wash when it gets bad because we have to remove the sand/salt from the chassis after winter...it is so corrosive. Kevin..it kinda figures someone would see you wash your car..lol. My husband would take a bucket of soapy water outside in a rainstorm if he had to.
