Now Dollar General has self check out. But you can only use cards for it. It’s bad enough we are forced to use them at times, but why can’t they all be the same? Every store’s self scans are different.

My DG also put in a self-serve spot, which also says card users only. I think I saw one of those at a HD, too, but most of theirs also take cash. Probably doing this more now because the setup is much cheaper, not having to take cash in, and give change.
Then there are those experiments in some areas (Whole Foods was one chain, but there were others), which I can't see catching on, since they would seem to rely on people being totally honest! You would need an account with them, and scan every item with your phone, as you put it in the cart, or bag, and that's it! How do they check up on what you have??

In my local Stop and Shop, I scan my store card and pick up a hand held scanner (they have a holder for it on the cart). Set my bags up in the cart and scan each item as I put it in the bags while shopping. Sort it for unpacking at home as I go. There are scales in the veggie section that weigh your items and print out a scannable label. When done shopping, go to self check and it reads a code from the hand scanner and prints out the receipt. There is always a helper there if needed. The scanner can do price checks as you shop. Lines for the cashier may be slow (it's a very large grocery store), but never had to wait at the self check, and with the scanner I am speedily out of there. Once home I can take the bags with the perishables out of the car and take my time with the others. That's convenience.

gardendmpls That sounds like a variation on what I was describing, while you were posting that! Still, what's to prevent dishonest people from taking advantage of it?

what's to prevent dishonest people from taking advantage of it? The first few times you use it the attendant comes over and randomly scans seven items from your bags. After that, they will do that once in a while- I've maybe had it done twice and I shop there every week. I guess they have figured out the psychology of it to minimize loss. Meanwhile CVS has a lot of things locked up, like Nyquil. When I had the clerk unlock the shelf to get that out, she told me people steal it a lot. Also pregnancy tests. Crazy world.

There are scales in the veggie section that weigh your items and print out a scannable label. I LOVE those weigh, scan, & label-print doohickies. Our Wegmans here does that, & even though they don't have self checkout, it makes it SO much easier for the cashier when I'm purchasing an unfamiliar vegetable. Although these Covid days, nearly all the vegetables are now pre-packaged.

Weigh? Scan? label print? Wow- you all live in a much more advanced world. We still just have self check out registers- cash or card accepted at most of them (except Whole Foods- that's card only) And gardendmpls , your Stop and Shop is waaaay beyond what we have here in the provinces!

Your Stop and Shop is waaaay beyond what we have here in the provinces! It's pretty new. Less than a year old, I think. Moved into the huge space left behind when K-Mart closed down. Great location. On the route home for many of the commuters in the Five Towns area here. Very well thought out.

We are still in the dark ages too as far scanners. I could see that being an issue with me as I'd wonder if I'd scanned something or not and likely end up scanning it twice. I'm sure deleting an item wouldn't be easy and would require assistance too. Nope. I'll stay with regular checkout lanes.

The Meijer chain in Michigan has the self-weight options as well. There are about 4 or so weight scales in the produce section. I don't recall when I first began using them but it was several months ago.
They're quite thorough, offering pix of vegetables and fruits, with a 4 digit code for each.

I could see using self check outs if there was a discount tor you if you used them. Why should I save them salaries and jobs? Nope. Not doing that. It’s not like that self service has no lines. You wait longer for the privilege of serving yourself? Fewer and fewer workers at the stores.. I haven’t t been to Walmart in years. Don’t even want to start that conversation . I’ll pay a few cents more to support small business first.

Peeve for me is people walking their dogs while playing with their phone. They don’t have a clue about their surroundings. This morning we went walking at 0900 due to rain. Went regular route. Saw a guy walking with dog across a parking lot coming directly toward us. I stopped to see where he was going. He finally looked up and saw us. I avoid all dogs while walking since our vicious dog attack 2 years ago. A few blocks later I saw the same guy coming across street and heading toward us. I took a turn in middle of the block to jay walk. He saw that then turned and went the other way. Still had phone in his hand.
Maybe his dog is friendly but walking is not the time for a meet and greet with strangers and strange dogs. I’d never seen him before.
Yes I am overly cautious and carry noise in a can as well as pepper spray.

It's funny how some people get behind the wheel of a car, and get so comfortable and careless that it's as though they're sitting on the sofa watching a movie --- instead of moving at speed in a metal box in the real world. Not funny-ha-ha, not funny-strange, but funny-maddening.
