Missouri peaches were beautiful today. The display had multiple lugs, but I just wanted a few. Another shopper (older female) stopped to look at the peaches…she picked up 10 peaches…gave each one a good squeeze…and walked away without making a purchase. I swear a couple of those peaches got such a hard squeeze, there were pressure marks where her fingertips were. Inconsiderate person.

peaches got such a hard squeeze, there were pressure marks where her fingertips were. When we had the orchard we learned how to test a peach. You cradle the whole peach evenly in the palm of your hand and barely press on it. You will feel if the peach is ready without bruising it like that woman did.

I’m one of nine.. we can all stretch our food dollars. One sister struck a wild turkey on the road with her car. Gutted itright there.had an axe in the trunk from chopping up kindling. Cooked it for hours and it was still rubbery. Threw it in a stock pot and cooked it a couple more days and swears it was delicious. One in five children goes hungry at night. We participated in the food program at school. That’s heartbreaking. Not uncommon for a child to ask for another for siblings. I live in a relatively middle class area but kids are hungry. Their diets are nutrient void. When food programs are cut they effect this population. The working poor. There is shame associated with the newly hungry family. The food doesn’t last the week. You never know what goes on behind closed doors. Feed the kids anyway.

When people accept a job and decide against it at the last minute. Case in point is the aide I fought for to help our daughter in school. We met with her on Friday and she asked several questions but never took the opportunity to interact with my daughter which was concerning. Before leaving the school I was clued in that she may not stay by another aide which didn't make me very happy as I thought she should have told us that when we met. This morning I got confirmation from the principal that the aide took another position thirty minutes after meeting our daughter. So we'll likely be dealing with substitutes until a new aide is hired.

Well. How frustrating. Better now rather than have your daughter begin to bond and she pulls a Houdini. I hope you find the right person and fit. Do you think they are oblivious or simply looking for a better/easier situation?

Newest Pet Peeve is any company that states they have vision, mission and values, but in reality, they are just marketing tools.

Everywhere I call there is a recording stating that “this call maybe recorded for training purposes”. How about training the employees to forward information or call back as promised? They all sound so reassuring on the phone but follow up is nonexistent.

We shopped at Walmart today…the few things I needed/wanted turned in to quite a few things. At checkout there’s two lanes being manned by cashiers. There’s three customers ahead of us. One guy behind me…then another. And another. Before the line moved, there was seven customers behind us. The other check stand was about the same. One customer…an older lady waited at an empty checkstand said “they were sending another waitress”. While waiting in line and getting impatient, I called the store and when somebody answered, I explained the situation and requested they open more checkstands. No reaction…nothing gained. The fellow behind me left his cart and went to customer service to request more cashiers. Nothing.
Walmart is trying to force customers in to using the self checkout. I refuse The customer behind me said he refuses to use the self checkout. Apparently all seven customers behind us felt the same way. In the meantime, there’s probably somebody in management with camera access to the front end who can see customers accumulating.
Whew!! Feel better already.

Every single cotton pickin' recording that tells me to listen carefully because their menu options have recently changed, if I know my party's extension I may dial it at any time, dial 911 if this is an emergency, list a bunch of useless options, tell me that my call is very important to them so please stay on the line, they're experiencing unusually heavy call volume, did I know that that I could save 10% off of my first order, they're rated number one in customer satisfation by some outfit I've never heard of, and would I like to take a brief survey after the call.
"We're sorry, you have entered an invalid option. Goodbye." <click>

binnylou, I have used the self checkout on occasion, and always have an issue requiring help. I tell them I wasn't trained for this job. The last time I used one, I bought a storage container with lid. I put the lid over by the bags, scanned the container. The screen said I had a possible "non scanned item". Then the screen ran the video of my entire gig and I could see it! People, the lid comes with the container and doesn't need to be scanned. I stood there. No one came to assist. So I just started pushing buttons. Must have got the right one because I was able to proceed with checkout.

My Walmart was one of the last places to put in self-serve lines, but the idiots sometimes didn't have an express line open - one of the reasons I rarely went in there. And the only two times I have been there since the pandemic started was for vaccination! And while there, I noticed that some things I used to go there for, since they had lower prices, they stopped carrying.
I rarely buy enough not to go through an express lane, so I often do the self-serve. This is because in the other stores, since I get most of my "essentials" at Aldi, I am usually only buying certain sale items, and there usually aren't many good ones in a particular week! But I almost always go in very early, when there is almost nobody there, and go through the store quickly, and the cashiers are usually just standing there, waiting, so I use them.

I use self check out a lot if I have just a few items. The lines are much shorter to none, so is the wait time (not stuck behind shoppers with big cart loads of stuff) and I can get out of the store more quickly. Like anything, the more you use it the easier it becomes. There have been a couple of times when I have abandoned a register- when I haven't been able to figure out what I did wrong, and no helper is in sight- to start again on a fresh register. But that is extremely rare these days.
But if there are no lines I prefer to take my few items to a cashier for the human interaction and to help .ensure their job.

Well. How frustrating. Better now rather than have your daughter begin to bond and she pulls a Houdini. I hope you find the right person and fit. Do you think they are oblivious or simply looking for a better/easier situation? Honestly I don't know if the position entailed more than she thought it would or not. My daughter still requires some assistance with toileting in that she's been known to unroll an entire roll of paper if left to her own as well as some wiping issues with #2. She also needs constant supervision outside as the school is approximately 30' from the highway with a partially fenced playground. Otherwise it's mainly just to help her stay focused and provide learning assistance to her throughout the day. I do know a substitute aide that has a good bond with my daughter as well as two special needs kids of her own. She so wanted the job but unfortunately she's on the other side of the county and can't make it to the school on time because of needing to get her own kids on and off the bus. So now we keep our fingers crossed and wait. As for self-checkout, I've had the same experiences as Mumsey 95% of the time I've used them. Then there's the "place the item in the bagging area" recording over and over. D*mn people, I'm not a professional bagger and it's annoying trying to deal with large items and so little area to put them. Then Kroger is the worst by asking if you want to apply your savings (um, no, I enjoy paying full price for everything) and then someone has to come put in a special code or something before you can finish checking out. Unless it's an absolute necessity, I go through checkout lanes manned by a human as I don't get a discount to bag my own stuff and I feel that I'm keeping somebody in a job.

Latitude33, I think the "mission" statement arises from military use, especially the websites of Veterans. It gives a certain authority and dedication to the enterprise. From what I've experienced though most of the "vision" is focused on how to increase sales. Just another marketing gimmick, as you note. Interesting comments on self-checkouts. The only place I've seen them in this area are the chain grocery stores, and I've become more comfortable with them since the pandemic started. Like some others who've shared their pandemic protections, I sponged and separated the mail, and also used handiwipes on the groceries before bringing them in. Since then, I cringe whenever I see someone handling something in the aisle, especially if they're not masked. And every time I shop, there are higher numbers of unmasked people. Perhaps the most advantageous reason for self checking and packing is that I pack the way I want. Apparently I appear as a helpless old lady, b/c others have decided to pack the groceries while I'm checking out. I've thanked them but indicated I really don't need their help. That assures me that the bread doesn't get packed underneath the canned goods and squished out of proportion (I prefer my bread straight and flat, not curled or squashed), or that refrigerable items aren't shoved together with ones that don't need refrigeration. I really do like the grocery self check-out option, and I think it's a faster way to move through the checkout-lines than standing in one, then waiting as someone in no hurry holds up others, and switching to another line means starting the waiting process all over again. On another level, I see some correlation from self packing to other areas of life in which relying on someone else is becoming more prevalent, specifically, home delivery of food. I was thinking that years ago pizzas were frequently delivered, but since the pandemic, that's spread to more general items such as food. I still prefer to do my own shopping.
