Are you aware that they are selling hornworms for ridiculous amounts of money to feed reptiles. Know this because the pet stores recently were out of crickets and mealworms and my gecko was losing weight. Bought a puny one for three dollars, but larger ones were five dollars apiece.

Haven't seen any hornworms or associated damage thus far {knocks on wood}, much unlike other years. Maybe the parasitic wasps have them under control this year.

First figs! Big Celeste, pinky-red (I like them picked early), and oh, they were so good.

Grasshopper of the season, yesterday. Where are the turkeys? They can wander through any time.

First squash, big tomato, blackberries and year's summer visit by my oldest girl and her teenage daughter. They got the other firsts plus new potatoes, garlic scapes (which were stored in the fridge), eggs and fresh garlic plus a book I had finished and knew they would enjoy.

binnylou, I noticed a first grasshopper the other day too. They thrive in dry weather and will eat anything. Good fish bait.

gardendmpls, Wow! I could have sent you $12 worth of gecko food in the past few days. I was kind of feeling left out as neighbors have been finding them for weeks, but alas they have found me.

They're in my yard, eating grasshoppers, trying to get to the remaining blueberries up high, and waiting for the grapes to ripen.

When the acorns start dropping, we should be seeing the turkeys.

Actually, they would probably be worth more. Three dollars is for little ones. Large ones are more like $5.

Brandywine. It wasn't quite ripe yet, but with all of the recent rain it was cracking pretty good, so I plucked it and brought it inside before bugs or disease found their way in. I was very patient. Sort of. I waited 24 hours before sampling. It still isn't quite ripe, but it sure is tasty.
