Breezy, don't you have some of those things that fit on your shoes like cleats? If not, you need to get some so you don't fall!
The thing is that this time the ground itself was fine - no snow or anything. Stupid me spilled some water while doing the hooved gang, & when I walked back over that particular spot, the spilled water beneath the grass had already frozen & both legs flew out from under me & landed me on my tush. Thankfully - for this situation anyway - I have a decent amount of padding there - lol!

Breezy, sorry to hear about your fall. I prescribe bed rest, hopefully with accompanying "waiting on hand and foot" service as you heal. I assume you don't have any broken bones?
I think you fell last year doing the same chores, didn't you?

Yup. We've almost come to expect me doing something stupid this time of year. At least this time I didn't break anything. Last year I broke my right wrist very badly which ended up requiring two surgeries - one to put in hardware; another to remove it - & a LONG rehab period. And a year or two before that I fell & broke my left wrist, but thankfully (to a point) that was a clean break & just required a cast + followup rehab.
So now whenever I find myself on my way down, I automatically throw my arms up in the air like I'm doing some bizarre sports "wave".

Oh darn- sorry about your fall. Hopefully you are resting well, with heat on those sore muscles. Take it easy for a couple of days. (and thank goodness that padding is good for something, eh?)
That's amazing how fast the spilled water froze.

Actually, two Advil this morning have really helped, but I'm still VERY thankful that dear husband is home today to help me in a little bit with the sledgehammering & warm watering. And he's very happy to do it since it beats an ER visit & the ensuing complications from having me with bum wing.

We woke up this morning to the sound of howling wind and looking outside it was nothing but blowing, billowing snow. The one thing that I DIDN'T hear was Mr. R (our rooster) crowing. We usually hear that every morning so I was imagining dead chickens laying in the coop.
I bundled myself in a hoodie and gloves and put on my boots. However walking is very scary once you get off of the driveway which the wind blew bare. Our yard had a layer of snow then a layer of freezing rain then a layer of snow, then more ice with snow on top. It's kind of like a layer cake made of ice for the cake and snow for the frosting. The ice is smooth and ultra slippery under the snow and you absolutely can not see it. I try to walk in the depressions from previous footprints and that helps but it's still very hazardous.
I just HAD to check on the chickens so hubby drove right across the yard in our 4WD pickup and drove me to the door of the coop. I opened the door expecting the worst but they were all standing in a group and looked at me like "what???"
Their water sits on a heated base so it was OK and I gave them some grain and everyone was happy.
I also filled the bird feeders and now I am indoors for the day. We'll probably go out again at dinnertime and give the chickens some more grain and a piece of fruit.
Each of the beehives has a bale of straw shielding it on the side that the wind always comes from so they are probably also snug in their hives.

I like your description of Mother Nature's decorations in your yard. And that's one mighty great husband you've got!

brown, that's sounds horrible. It's 5 degrees out there now but its sunny and the wind died down. Yesterday was miserable with wind and snow and bitter cold.
Breezy, I hope your feeling better. I slipped on the icy path while walking Kaner but just kind of wrenched my shoulder, nothing serious. Spring can't come too soon for me.

Rexx- that is quite a description. I really got the feel for what you are experiencing. And those chickens are very fortunate critters to have you and your hubby doing what you are, for them. Good for him to drive across the yard . You two are heroes!

Thanks, they WERE happy to see us. He just went out to give them a snack for the night and brought in 2 VERY cold eggs but they didn't crack so I guess that we got them in time.

I'm much better this morning, although I think that Advil will continue to be a close friend for the next couple of days.
Am currently getting ready to go out & pick up some more alfalfa for the hooved gang, as well as groceries for we humans, since we're supposed to get socked with possibly 8"+ of white stuff starting sometime between noon & 2 p.m. today & going into tomorrow. Hubby decided to go into work today (even though technically his office is closed for Presidents Day) & take tomorrow off instead. So while I'll have his assistance with critter care tomorrow, today I'll be on my own & will need to unload the alfalfa, sledgehammer water tubs, & top up with warm water all by lonesome, which I'd like to have done before the flakes start to fall.
Bitterly cold here this morning, but at least there's no wind.

Breezy, be careful and wear the cleats whether you think you need them or not!
We didn't get as cold last night as they had predicted, we stayed in the low 40's, but we have only gone up about 3º since it got light...all the way up to 46º right now and the wind is up and rain on the way. Just keep all that pink & blue stuff (weather map colors) north of us please!!!

I have Yak Tracks that I would wear when I was out on the frozen lakes interviewing anglers for work. They work pretty well. www.yaktrax.com/product/walkI woke up to snow this morning. At least the temps are not too frigid and the wind is not blowing.
