Anybody doing dahlias from seed? If so, are they "difficult"? My seed is fresh from Renee's. I planted one small tray...probably 12 seeds...two have germinated and those two plants are doing great. I think they are up to eight leaves.
I planted another tray of 12 seeds on 2/19. They have bottom heat and so far, only one sprout. The one seed that did sprout did so in two days and now nothing with the remaining eleven. Is this typical or am I just being impatient? The first batch was planted 1/27 if I remember correctly.

I was going to but being the first year I thought I would try the tubers first. I have one from 2 years ago...no real hope from that but trying it anyway. And so far 3 others from last year. Have some tubers coming from Swan Island next month. Just put them in the pot last weekend.

I looked on Swan Island's website for anything to help, this is all I could find:
not much help
"100 MIXED DAHLIA SEED PACKET - Dahlia seed in a range of colors and sizes collected from our fields. These dahlias will be completely random with most being the open center types. Instructions will be included. These must be started indoors and planted out after the last frost. "

Red, you needed to look a little further... On top of the page where that 100 Mixed Dahlia Seed Packet there was a selection bar where they had a tab you could click to get instructions on how to grow dahlias, including from seed (toward bottom of page) www.dahlias.com/howtogrowdahlias.aspx

I'm not usually one to throw in the towel...but time marches on and these dahlia seeds just are not going to sprout. So, I transplanted the one that did..to his own personal cottage cheese container. I'm going to try pre-sprouting some seeds on a coffee filter in a plastic bag. If those don't sprout, I'll be asking for a refund/replacement.
I really wanted some pots of these on the deck.

I don't think our weather is ready for them, so I'll be putting them in pots. My plan was to sink pots in the flower garden and fill them...then plant the tubers. I wonder how long I can hold the tubers before planting? Maybe I should plant when received so as to get a head start on the growing and then sink the pots? Decisions, decisions.

Yes, I received them early...paid the extra $5. I potted them and almost all have come through...a couple are a little slower...They also sent an variety I hadn't requested I guess because I got 7 altogether. Use a deep pot so you can angle the tuber upwards and centered in the soil

I tried to stay away from this, since I'm an idiot and forgot to bring mine in, but they are resprouting.
When you get your tubers, pot them up and sprout them inside.........harden them off, plant them in the ground. Mine are staying in the pots this year.
Seeds should NOT take that long to sprout.
So get your money back..................5 days with 80 degree soil temp for mine last year.
The red colors take longer to sprout.
Anyway, this year they are tubers, and lordy............sprout them inside and don't set them out till frost and COLD is gone.............just drag them in and out after they sprout.
They don't need light till they sprout, YA KNOW. And they HATE COLD and Frost. BE CAREFUL.
Have I said everything right? I hope.

No, not planted. I opened them and inspected them. Quite a variety in the sizes of the tubers. They all look sound and all but one is showing a little start of growth...just a tiny bit. I need to find five more pots to plant them in, since I bought a couple of dahlias at the local farm store. My plan is to put them in pots and sink the pot...possibly with some gravel in the planting hole, under the pot. And some hardware cloth under the bottom of the pot so that NOBODY can find their way into the pot. I really don't have room in the house to start these babies in 12 inch pots. If I start them in smaller pots and then transfer them to the bigger pots, will that be okay? Today was such a beautiful day. I sat down after lunch and had the most delicious nap. Doc put me on a new med and I think I can blame him. Maybe I'll get those babies planted tomorrow.
