Yesterday started out with planting pole beans for the first time. Then finish that row with Contender bush beans. Planted cucumbers, I plant my cucumbers around the same concrete mesh cage I use for tomatoes. Finished up planting 8 hills of zucchini. That was enough garden tending as it was getting hotter. Fired up the tractor and mowed the smaller pasture then mowed the yard with the riding mower. Headphones on listening to country music while mowing isn’t a bad way to still be productive when your a little wore out. Had a surprise visit from sweethearts youngest to grandsons who ended up spending the night. It was a good day

Spent time on porch drilling holes in the bottoms of 4 planting boxes to sit on the porch wall. Transplanted basil, thyme and flowers into them. Put parsley in another pot and more flowers in others. Then briefly watered them. Will do more thorough watering later. Too hot to hang outside.

Finally got the majority of bedding plants in larger pots and/or hanging baskets this morning. Daughter seemed much better this morning and thought we were done with the nasty stomach bug, then hubby started getting sick this afternoon. I guess I'll be next and not looking forward to it at all.

Replanted one hill of honeydew...a total no show, while three others hills sprouted. Same seed packet, same method. Somethings just can’t be explained.
Replanted cucumbers. Originally planted four hills with three seeds per hill. Today, there is one seed sprouted, one hill has nothing, two hills have a stem with no leaves. These hills have a bit of straw scattered over the seeded area to help maintain moisture in the soil. I’m finding role-polys in that bed. I thought they ate mainly decaying stuff. Do I blame them or birds?
And finally, I tackled dahlia tuber planting...again.

Somethings just can’t be explained. I just had to reseed my sugar pie pumpkin. I planted only one hill but none of the seeds sprouted. I hope this round does it.

Busy day yesterday to beat the heat. Went for 3 mile walk at 6. Ate breakfast and since the grass was dry mowed the yard. High dew point. Others had the same idea, usually on Sunday morning it's pretty quiet. Then emptied out the chest freezer. While that was thawing, cleaned off the driveway and drug the kitchen rugs out to the driveway to wash them. They are indoor/outdoor area rugs. Washed the non-skid Gorilla mats under them too. Used broom scrubbing brush, Oxy-Clean and Mr. Clean. That's a twice a year project. Finished cleaning the freezer and put everything back. Vacuumed and Swiffered the kitchen floor and basement stairs.
Did weekly garage cleaning up. By then it was getting hot. Sat on the deck and read a while.

Same seed packet, same method. Somethings just can’t be explained. I got tired of no shows and started planting cucumbers, squash and melons in the same small pots I use to start other veggies. Because it is warm out I can tell right away what's not sprouting and needs replanting. They grow in the pots for a week or two, which is long enough to be more resistant to birds and bugs, before being set out. No gaps in the rows along the trellis or the hills.

Yesterday started out with a carnival atmosphere with us having the 3yr old and 9month old grandsons all night. The older one is pretty high energy and little brother is just becoming mobile. Never a dull moment. I finally did some bucket watering of potted outside plants and hoed around the new trees in preparation for a slow watering. Chickens fed and freshwater seems to keep them happy. Boys parents stopped by so with sweetheart free we headed to the garden to plant pumpkins and squash. Sweetheart finished the days gardening by planting some irises that mom had sent home with me. We then went to her oldest son’s for grilled burgers and brats. We ended the day with a trip to pickup a couple of antique pieces that sweetheart had stripped and refinished. She was tickled with the results. It was a good day

All 'maters staked and caged, except for the Sprite cherries. Used the hand sanitizer cleaning method while moving about and handling/trimming them (thanks, pepperhead212 , toted a little bottle of it out there hooked to my chair as you suggested)... In other "better late than never" news, planted yellow straightneck squash, too. A late harvest all around, maybe, but I'm just thrilled that I've been able to do what I have this season.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The stomach bug caught me right before midnight and it's been mostly a day of sleeping. I didn't even go check on the garden until around 4pm and just lucky I watered good last evening. Why oh why do these viruses seem so much worse in the warmer months. On a brighter note, I rescheduled my daughter's dentist appointment for tomorrow and will hopefully get a bit of gardening in if the weather cooperates.

stomach bug caught me right before midnight Hope you are feeling better. We used to call them twenty four hour viruses and I had plenty of them growing up, which means less of them now.

planted yellow straightneck squash I always plant yellow crookneck really late, the main reason is I have to wait until the garlic is out because that's where it goes! I always get a good crop with no squash bugs. I have planted Patty Pan late like that too.

After our walk yesterday I went around all the perennial beds with my trusty hoe and disrupted a gazillion tiny maple trees. Then inside to do some laundry, lines and dog blankets, couch covers. Did some reading. Made spaghetti for DH for supper. I sure do need to wear my readers, discovered too late that I grabbed ground turkey instead of hamburger out of the freezer. Oh well, it works. Made a stir fry for me of veggies and rice with a sauce recipe that I use for cashew chicken. It was like cashew chicken except no chicken.
Speaking of spaghetti, I recall a thread here about breaking up your spaghetti. Darned if I could find it. Anyway last week when I took step mon to the store, she had spaghetti on her list. I saw a store brand box, the spaghetti is half as long as the normal stuff already broken in half! Same price as not broken in half. Interesting! So she got that one as she does break it in half.
No specific plan for today, might scrub the driveway with the scrubber broom. Watering the entire garden will happen in a day or two, no significant rain predicted for at least the next 10 days. Not normal for Iowa.
