Usually it's late July when it gets too hot around here - so much that tomatoes and eggplants drop blossoms. Hopefully, it will stay in the low 90s, and this day is a fluke. I've been back out a couple of times, but not for long!

Went out in the heat of the day to day to set out some cucumbers, peppers and eggplant and plant some beans. Ususally would do around 6PM, but need to get ready for the Sabbath then, so out early. Thunderstorm came along with perfect timing. Don't need to worry about wilting.

Was up early and replanted the yellow squash and zucchini the birds got. Turned the new compost pile in the garden, emptied and refilled the wading pool and decided it was just too darn hot and stalked the USPS site until it said my seeds had been delivered. This evening I finally tackled the tangled mess of asparagus seedlings and put them in a larger container. Planned to sow cabbage and cauliflower but it was dark by then.

Started the day picking green beans and was pleased to have enough for supper. 15 yr old grandson came over and helped me cage the tomato plants. It went really well and I’m happy to have it done. I was really impressed by his interest and willingness to help. Proud grandpa. Went to sweethearts with plans to get ahead of caging her tomato plants but a couple of her grandkids were there and who can resist eating ice cream cones outside on the swing?? Cooked the green beans for supper and called it a day. There’s always tomorrow.....

Transplanted some spinach and lettuce. Started some new lettuce indoors. Checked the slug trap. No slugs, but the beer dried up in the heat as well. Guess I'll have to have a beer today to bait the trap again.
Picked some more Supersweet 100s. They're coming in good now, just enough for a salad a day. It won't be long before I'm overwhelmed.
Left all of the slicing tomatos on the plants again. They're red, but really really firm, so I'm guessing that they're not quite ripe yet. The Roma tomatos are catching up to the Big Beef, and the Caprese that were given to me are ripening as well. It won't be long now...

Got the 3 mile walk out of the way, went at 0530. Once the sun pops up things change quickly. Got all outdoor watering done, sold some garlic. Done outside today!

Weeded and dead headed, weeded some more, cut back some of the silver lace vine, did I say weeded? Followed the shade. Lots of good stuff for the compost pile. Now I'm ready for some bubbly while we BBQ our dinner.

I did a LOT today! It wasn't supposed to get to 91° today, but it did - was supposed to get to 87°, which is why I "scheduled" my work for today. I dug out my pressure washer (buried deep in the shed), and started it up a few days ago, plus I changed the oil in it (don't think that I had ever done this). And today I cleaned the deck, a couple of chairs out there (still more to do), and all of that concrete on the back and N side of the house! It had gotten so bad that it was slippery, when it would rain. The reason it was black/green on that side was because the N side was shaded, and wouldn't dry off when it rained, even a small amount. I don't remember how long ago it was that I did it, but when I almost slipped on it, I knew it was time again. Pressure washed concrete, showing how bad it had gotten. by pepperhead212, on Flickr After doing this, in about 3½ hours (with only a couple of breaks, though it still got hot by the time I was done), I proceeded to dig up all of my garlic, except for the metechi. That took about 2½ hours, including cleaning it all off, and readying it for hanging in the basement. Here's a photo of that - I'll post the rest on the garlic thread. Montana Giant, Italian Red, and Estonian Red, by pepperhead212, on Flickr Something funny happened as I was preparing that garlic, on my picnic table. My neighbors on that side were having a small 4th of July BBQ, and that lady was over at the fence, waving at me, trying to get my attention (I had these noise cancelling headphones on, and really heard nothing, except for the music!). I finally looked up, and saw her! She said that she saw that I always get engrossed in my work, and she saw that I had been working all day, and probably wouldn't feel like cooking tonight, and brought me a "care plate". I thanked her profusely, and asked her if she needed any garlic! She said that she had actually used the last of her garlic for the food today, so I gave her about a dozen of the heads I set aside to use first, because they are coming apart, or something! I told her that the skin would be hard to get off, but this is one of the reasons it is cured, but it can still be used. I had about 20 like this. I don't know how it happens, but there are always 2 or 3 that get one of the cloves sliced by the spade - I'm cutting about 5 inches away from the row, so how does it get out there?!

Awesome day for fishing, in spite of the heat. The monster bluegills were liking the bass lure today. Several bass, lost count, only 3 were keepers. I was able to follow the shade around the quarry. No wind, no anchor needed! Saw a giant snapper come up for air, he saw me and disappeared. Fileted all the fish, left half for Dad. I arrived at 5:45, worked in Dad's garden 1 hr 15 min, then on the water by 7:10. Came home and watered all pots and celery, planning to water entire garden after the back yard is shade, after 5:30.

Watered the garden this morning and rigged up a sheet to act as a sort of shade cloth for my cabbage. I have one that isn't taking the heat at all, one that looks so-so and the other six look pretty good despite temps hitting 97 today. We had planned on grocery shopping tomorrow but decided it was going to be too hot to have a kid stuck in a car for a few hours even with the air on. So she visited with grandma while we went today. I erroneously thought Sunday morning wouldn't be very busy but I was so wrong. The good news is that more people seemed to be wearing masks today. Picked up the munchkin, visited for a bit and returned home. Have so many things I want to do but the only thing I accomplished was removing the old spigot from the rain barrel. Enjoyed the rest of the evening.

200 yard dash out back to shut off a water line. Clear blue sky. Calm.

Watered the garden, picked a few more peas and tied tomatoes again. Started a trash can compost pile with some partially decomposed leaves mixed with sand and grass clippings. The tomatoes are loving this heat as it seems like they’re growing like crazy. Beans are finally blooming!
