Went out to the garden after work to check out any damage from those storms yesterday. A few Milkweed have fallen over and some of the dill, but nothing heartbreaking. Then saw the potato leaves gone. The deer must have visited last night. I have them in muck buckets next to the garden in between the fence and the greenhouse. I thought they would be safe there but I guess they showed me.

I didn't get any rain last night or today, but last night there was a wicked wind. Fortunately, only a couple tomato branches were snapped, and one short section of a cucumber plant. The cucumber branch I stuck in the ground - who knows if it will work, but worth a try. Picked 2 more cukes and a few okra, but that was all.

gardendmpls, yes, I am very aware of that, first hand! Dad used to go the big food bank and get all the outdated produce. He would toss some in the quarry and take the rest to a neighbor who has hogs. Breads are/were another big outdated item. Hogs love that stuff. Since the pandemic though, he can't just waltz in there and pick it up. I don't know what they do with it now. Hopefully with higher demand it's getting used. Our food bank, a satellite of the one in the big city, does have refrigeration and the people who work there and do the accepting of goods are paid employees. tom π, I suspect it was reason #3.

Another rainy morn, but clearing now. So I picked more summer squash, another big bowlful of Tifton blueberries, and topped the dill. Found a few late strawberries, ate them, then admired the loaded tomatoes and peppers. Tatsoi is forming seed pods for saving, Candy Roaster squash plants are looking like big candelabras, about to spread. Turned the compost. Made plans for the fall crops. Saw the first ruby-throated hummer I've seen in a while. Now, I'm a-gonna get to placing a seed order or two, especially for davidjp's suggested Madeley kale. I feel sorry for folks who don't, or won't, or can't garden.

Went out early and watered potted plants. Dug some comfrey and horseradish to share with a friend. Pulled up wild touch-me-not to get to the horseradish and chopped it up to either freeze or make a tincture out of. I haven't had a bad case of poison ivy in several years (knocking on wood) but thought it would be good to be prepared. Planted some Dutch iris bulbs I bought a few months ago and promptly lost. Started another mulch/chicken manure compost pile.

Mowed the yard. Watered it too, with my dripping sweat! Toured the garden, everything looks as it should. Oregon Giant peas have been going crazy.

Started the day tying up tomatoes at my house. Watered the garden with the long handle. Did a load of wash and hung it out to dry. Push mowed my yard and took mom another bucket of coffee grounds. ( She was tickled) Stopped by my oldest daughters house and recruited her oldest son to help me cage in the tomatoes tomorrow. Somehow they got much bigger than I thought they were. Went to sweethearts after dark and had to check on the garden with my flashlight. How silly is that??πππ

Gardening by flashlight isn't silly at all centralilrookie , I've done it several times when I worked two jobs. I started my day by watering my bed of cucumbers and squash before I put down mulch. The faucet on the rain barrel was a bit stiff and I couldn't get it completely shut off. So, I ran in and got a pair of pliers and got it down to a slow drip before the handle broke off. When I fixed the hole in it I pondered getting a new faucet because the handle was a bit rough and decided that it would do for this year. So now I need to get the barrel empty again to install a new one. I have a feeling there'll be a couple wading pools residing in the garden temporarily. The good news is that the chicken wire stopped the destruction of the squash seedlings so I'm guessing it was birds after all. Oh and the faucet on the rain barrel quit dripping but it's a pain to dip water out of the top of it.

I changed the oil in my pressure washer today, once it got shady in that area; even though it was much hotter by then, it was breezy, and no sun! Looked at everything, of course. ;) Tomorrow the washing will get done, or at least started.

Went to the big city today. Whirlwind trip. One store. In. Out. Gone only 90 minutes. We are condensing things more these days with the increase of virus cases. 700 in Iowa in one day.
Went to Community Garden, gave my plants a dose of compost tea. Did a little weeding at home, not many weeds since everything has grown. Watered all pots and celery. Done.

I was going to pressure wash my deck, and the concrete area on the N side of my house today, but at 10 am it was already 89Β°, and it's 91Β° now, heading to 96Β°, so I'm putting it off! Did very little, the brief time I was out there this morning.

I'm with you pepperhead212, It's too hot to do anything outside. Definitely the dog days of summer. I just want to lie about and snooze.

As I came back in to the house, DW asked, "Whatcha been doing out there?" I said, "I finally got the beans straked and stung." She said, "You sound like Papa Smurf." I said, "It's hot out there." She said, "I know what you meant to say."

Ditto re: TOO HOT!!! Did a quick grocery run in the morning, then did some watering when we returned, but even that wasn't done all that efficiently. Will have to try to rise early tomorrow to do a more competent job. What I did today was just enough to stave off the "wilties". Just too darn hot.
