Yesterday was another rainy day, so I got some inside cleaning done. Started to tidy up extra bedroom that is the seed starting room and becoming the catchall room. Well you all know how that goes. Pretty soon I had everything out of the closets and shelves etc. Filled up a box for the thrift store, organized craft supplies, threw out cracked plastic trays reorganized gift wrap and gift bags and all that kind of stuff. What a mess it was. Nice and organized now. Today is my older sister's birthday, so we are going fabric shopping. I need to recover my kitchen chairs and she wants to help. Younger sister will join us for lunch. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the garlic bed prepped. With all that rain, it should be easier.

Besides forgetting I had put the sprinkler on for the seeded native grass, I finished trimming back another 2 areas of iris. Then I dug out a section hardy plumbago, potted some of it up for a friend but composted a lot of it. New plans for that little area. Little to do in the veggie garden. It's having an identity crisis- it thinks it's mid summer- so I am watching for things to be ready to harvest. It's pretty lush- probably more lush than anything else in my perennial gardens.

Still no rain in sight here. Mowed the front yard, shady areas were quite tall. Put it all on the garlic bed-to-be. Watered it down again. I'm thinking in a week I can probably dig the bed. Froze 3 ice cream buckets of broccoli yesterday. The side shoots are starting to come on. Cut some kale, it's sooo full of tiny cabbage worms! Wishing for a frost to get rid of those cabbage moths.
Hair appt today, getting a bunch cut off. Kinda over long hair.

After spending the day with my sister and buying the material to recover my kitchen chairs, I went out to the garden finally. Picked a few beans and another zucchini. Some volunteer peas are blooming, a nice surprise. Started to dig the garlic bed. A little easier since all the rain we had on Monday and Tuesday, but still needs more digging. I need to rake up some of the leaves that have started to fall in the driveway to dig into that bed. Thinking of my sister. She would have been 65 today.

Up at 0400. Started more laundry. Gotten into the routine of sewing til light enough to walk. After walk, defrosted basement chest freezer. Lots of "fluffy" frost around the upper edges, hope that's not a bad sign. I'll keep an eye on it. Then put a pan of tomatoes to cooking for paste. Sewed some more. Hard to be outside right now, darn no-see-ums and Asian beetles are in full force. The Asian beetles because soybean harvest has begun and that's where they hang out. And they pinch, not bite. Either way, still painful.
Went for haircut, 4 inches gone. Now to contemplate color, maybe, maybe not. Kinda chicken after almost 3 years of letting it go natural. Took longer than usual to get to next town, they are doing road work, which no one was aware of, and farm equipment traffic is heavy.

No gardening today. I spent more time than I thought I would have to, cleaning my office after the ceiling drywall repair. This is after I had taped up plastic drop cloths- ceiling to floor. Of course, the sealed off area was worse than the rest of the room, but dust still crept everywhere. I guess it was time for a very thorough clean including walls getting wiped down. Would have much rather been playing outside on this beautiful summer-like day. But the office sure does feel good now.

We're finally getting some much needed rain, though just through occasional showers. Cleared off another bed Wednesday and hung the remaining bean vines from that bed in the shed to finish drying. Another huge handful of noodle beans harvested and hopefully will get them in the freezer today. I also temporarily straighten the compost bin enough for hubby to deposit several containers of leaves, chestnut burrs and forsythia clipping he had shredded. Looked everywhere for the roll of wire I used to corral the greenhouse parts together to no avail as I needed it to rewire the metal panels that contain the compost. In a perfect world, the new compost bin would be built and ready for use, but dealing with what I have. Hubby had two sales and I needed to provide the last year's worth of PTO financial statements for a school audit and, so we killed three birds with one stone and dropped them off afterwards. Finally have a meeting date for conference with teacher, special ed teacher and special ed coordinator that I requested a month ago.
Still haven't pulled the washer out to inspect it as there's still totes to be moved beforehand, but plan to work on it today if it rains. Plenty of clean clothes yet, but it's undergarments that are getting dangerously low and may end up hand washing a few things and possibly making a trip to the laundromat. Withh the water levels so low, I don't want to risk doing laundry at my parent's or mother-in-law's because they rely on well water.
Just realized that I've pretty much made it through the garden season without burnout (from gardening that is) and that makes me happy. Still much to be done in both gardens and much to harvest yet. Haven't even prepared a place for all the plants that need to come inside for the winter yet.

She would have been 65 today. The birthdays are always challenging. My maternal grandmother would have been 93. Who knows, maybe they were celebrating together.

I actually sent birthday cards for a few years to my brother after he passed away at the age of 62. A hole in my heart for sure.

Went to the big city after walk this morning. Got all errands done in record time. Headed home and found a utility guy here locating underground stuff. The stump grinder guy called them, it's the recommended thing to do even if you know/think there is nothing in the way. Fridge guy came again. Been fooling around with the ice maker for 4 months! Replaced everything there is to replace on the ice maker. Now he's thinking it's got to do with evaporation coils. He said they've already spent half of what the appliance is worth trying to figure it out........
Went down to the basement and checked the freezer, it's making that fluffy ice crystal stuff near the top of the freezer already, it's a chest freezer. Looked at the mfg label, the thing is 23 years old!! I had no idea. Found the label on the side next to the wall and took a pic of it since I couldn't really see it. It's a Kenmore, we got it used at 7 yrs old. It's been a good one. I'm thinking it needs replacement seal, but do I want to put money into something that old when it could just as easy be the compressor.........the seal looks good, not dry or cracked or split anywhere. I'll watch it over the weekend then make a decision. I hate it when I have to procrastinate......In the meantime I'll look up the cost of a new seal.
Took out another tomato plant and cut off the newly shooting asparagus ferns. Picked beans and pods again today. The no-see-ums found me so came in.
Well that was quick and easy. $160 for new seal. Hmmm.....

Well that was quick and easy. $160 for new seal. Hmmm..... I need a new seal (gasket) for my freezer. Was thinking of putting it in myself, but was told by a friend who used to do appliances (now he does HVAC) that putting the gasket on is a big pain in the a**. It's a full size freezer and has a lot of my harvest, so I'll cough up the money to fix it. It is not that old, anyway. Also need to fix the icemaker on my refrigerator, but it is super difficult to roll out of its niche in the wall. Meanwhile, I just keep icetrays in the freezer section.

Gave my body a rest today after several days of hours long outdoor labor and indoor cleaning. Saw 2 clients at the office, toured the in town gardens with the tenant, who cares for the back yard, gave some suggestions, answered some questions. Then came home and read until dinnertime.

DW …I felt like I was reading my diary ..the roof posting 😬 …yesterday I sprayed the N tall side of the house that was filthy from the road drift…used wet and forget it n a pump up sprayer. So this 72 yr old lady is hanging out the 2 nd story window with a large hand held mirror, spraying the 3 rd story area…and it was successful…a bit odd looking at a reverse and spraying toward 🤔I should see a difference by November. The stuff works but you must be patient. It’s how they clean the amphitheater in Australia. Then I sprayed the front and garage. I had done the back weeks ago so I as able to wash the downstairs windows and remove the screens and the window A/C.

Walked as soon as it began to get light this morning. The Princess is getting very set in her ways. If we deviate from our route, she plants her feet and refuses to move! But sometimes we just have to change it up a little, they were spraying Court House grounds today and we needed to stay away from there. After much pulling and pushing, got her to move in the direction we needed to go. It's fun when she does this in the middle of the street. Tried to work outside some today, No-See-Ums continue to make their presence known. Sewed off and on most of the day. Got another pan of tomatoes brought up from the basement to cook down tomorrow. Shucked a big bunch of pole beans from their husks. Did a little on-line window shopping for a new freezer. DS is of the opinion to buy a new one given the age of this one. The repair guy for the fridge yesterday mentioned they may be able to give me a sizable coupon toward a new fridge if it turns out they can't totally repair this one. He did mention that most fridges with French doors on top and freezer on bottom have issues with the ice unit, because the ice unit is not in the freezer. When it rains it pours! But I really wish it would rain for real!!
