cut down the lamb's quarters Have you used/cooked these? I have a packet of a cultivated type that I didn't get to sow this year but am interested in. If you did use any, what did they taste like?

Finished weeding/cutting the native grass in the private garden area. It was perfect weeding conditions, as it had rained last night.
Then we went to the 4th community meeting in our village, regarding the dumping the resort was trying to do into our creek. Although we had a preliminary notice, an hour before the meeting the resort put out the public statement that they were suspending the permit application with the EPA and have requested an accelerated permit process with NM Environmental Dept to discharge their treated effluent on their property. Once that goes through they will then rescind the EPA permit application. It's not a done deal yet but it's looking good.
Never underestimate the power of community coming together, organizing, protesting, communicating for the common good. Our first (short term) goal is close to being met. Our next goal is the long term goal of getting our Rio Tesuque designated Outstanding National Resource Water (ONRW) An ONRW designation is the highest level of protection against degradation that can be afforded for a waterbody under the State of New Mexico’s Water Quality Standards. We hope to have an impact that will affect water quality throughout NM.

desertwoman, would love to see a picture of your finished floors. Too hot to do much outside. I ran to the thrift store to drop off some kids clothes and some toys the girls don't play with anymore. When it's too hot to play outside, you clean and declutter the inside. Went out and watered the deck pots and cut down a couple of sunflower stalks. The yellow finch have been out there picking the seed heads apart. Was soaking wet with sweat just doing that. Came in and I've been going thru all the old gardening magazines. Haven't really found any interesting articles. There were all kinds of gardening magazines in that box, not just OG. Will put those in the recycle bin, but will try to find a home for the OG.

Hoping this is the last extreme heat day of the season. Piddling around the house today. Let Mr. Gray out at 3 pm, looked out at 4 and it's raining, so went to make sure he went in. He did, gave him his treats and locked everything up. He's a very good cat, when he sees me coming, he goes through the cat door, and sits by the counter for his treats. Loves chin and belly rubs too.
Got a bag of veggies ready for another neighbor, now that I feel human again I can interact with people!!! Rain is really coming down now, yay!! Cooler temps on the way.

Busy day. Put in pea trellis where I had cleaned out the poison ivy. Placed it away from the wall in case I need to go back there to bump off any that tries to come back. Planted shell peas below trellis. Then cleared out in front of coop and planted snap peas. Need to put in trellis later. Planted snow peas by the fence in spaces where cuke vines didn't make it. Went to another area where planted cuke vines and put in stakes for trellis. Filled in gaps where bush beans didn't come up. Went back to pea trellis bed and planted some fast growing bush beans , leaving space to walk between the bush beans and peas. Pulled some morning glory (bindweed?). Need to look at the leaves again. The flowers are blue. Pulled up easily. Used the string weeder to tackle some of the remaining jungle by the house. On the way in topped off some more of the potato bags. Grandsons came in the afternoon and picked pole beans (mostly Northeaster which is large and flat). Also picked tomatoes, squash and blackberries. I notived that although I planted less tomatoes this year, the tomatoes are loaded with more fruit than I usually get. Boys got the eggs from the coop. Daughter in law mentioned craving for squash, so gave her an eightball squash to use in making dinner. Came in pooped. Figured I had enough time to take a 30 minute nap. As soon as my head touched the pillow, my phone rang with the announcement that my brother was here so popped right back up. Need to look for the button under my pillow that triggers the phone.

Pulled some morning glory (bindweed?). Need to look at the leaves again. The flowers are blue. Pulled up easily. Sounds like morning glories. Bindweed flowers are white or pink. The vertical roots go down 20-30 ft and the lateral roots are about 1-2 ft deep, so they don't pull up easily.

Over the past several days Jesse has been refusing to eat anything and her energy has been very low. On her fifth day not eating. She plays a little bit of ball and we can walk for a bit but she just hasn't that spark she has always had everyday. A few weeks ago she showed weakness in her muscles and had a limp on each front leg. Monday she went to the vet's. Xrays to check for a blockage, bloodwork showed she has a tick disease, not lyme thankfully, $700 later (ouch) Anaplasmosis it is called and Jesse had all those mentioned symptoms.
Cooked up some hamburg mix for today. I had to force feed her mashed tunafish and veggie mixture last night, not ramming down though I just put some food at the back of her throat until she swallowed. Needed her to eat some food because she had to start taking doxycycline for the anaplasmosis and food was needed. So this morming she ate some scrambled egg with a little hamburg. First she has had on her own in 5 days. Not much but enough to give her the med. Even appetite med wasn't working.
Hopefully this the start of her getting better.

At least that can be treated with antibiotics. My #1 daughter got lyme and babesiosis from the same tick. They can't give the antiparasitic and the antibiotic together so they treated the lyme and she had to wait for her immune system to clear out the babesiosis, which attacks the red blood cells. That was a real mess. Luckily we insisted she go to urgent care as her doctor had left her insurance program and they wanted her to wait several weeks until her new doctor was listed. Urgent care recognized the lyme in a glance, although she didn't have the bullseye rash; more like as measles type of rash. She still has some neuro problems from the whole episode.

So you made me really sit down and analyze the flavor a bit. I often use it as a spinach substitute as it grows during the summer and doesn't cook down quite as much. It's a bit tougher than spinach as the texture doesn't disintegrate, but still tender. As for flavor, I actually like it better than spinach and it seems to have a hint of brassica flavor. Of course that may be because I harvested the flower buds too. Generally I harvest medium size leaves, but this late in the season I'm actually picking tender young shoots. This is the wild cultivar and I simply let a few seedlings grow every spring. They get quite large as I have one nearly 6' tall and another I chopped down a few days ago had a diameter of 2".

which attacks the red blood cells. Jesse did had low platelets due to the anaplasmosis. Need to go back to vet sometime to do another bloodtest to check them. l She still has some neuro problems from the whole episode. Do they think the neuro trouble will be resolved as time goes by. Good thing you persisted in getting her to get treatment. Prayers for her and family

I'm proud of myself for not committing to working our bake sale and kitchen at the Jubilee this year but I did promise baked goods. Pulled enough bananas out of the freezer for 8 turns of banana bread which should equal 24 mini loaves. All ingredients measured out so I can do an assembly line and I even have the eggs beaten and in separate little bowls to save more time. Stopped at dollar store yesterday and picked up two cheap cookies sheets as I use the disposable aluminum pans and placing them in the sheet provides more stability. Also I can bake twice as many at a time. Planned to start last night after kiddo went to sleep but bananas weren't totally defrosted and I forgot to set the butter out. A lady from a different chapter of our organization didn't realize we were buying pepperoni rolls from a local bakery to resell and bought pepperoni and cheese to donate as well as a $10 donation. I used the money to buy some hot roll dough and ground the pepperoni and cheese last night too. Since we're buying plain pepperoni rolls the ones with cheese might be a big hit.
Basically just watering the garden in the mornings and harvesting a few bean pods for seed. This morning I harvested my first cucumbers in three years as well as a handful of Trionfo Violetto beans and a Corbaci pepper for my morning omelet. Will spend most of the day baking which I really wanted to do at night, but it's forecasted to possibly reach 100° today and I'm sure as heck not planning to go outside. Hubby generally works Wednesdays but taking the day off too due to the heat. Some rain possible this weekend but not holding my breath.
