Transplanted an ocotillo and beavertail cactus into the landscape. Divided and re-potted misc plants. Mostly an indoor day. Learned today that Pima County has a seed library through the public library system. The concept is to encourage saving open pollinated seeds locally adapted to the area. Participants are asked to try and save and return at least as much as they "checked out". Thought I was having a senior moment a couple of days ago as my potted basil had a nice layer of pine needles spread over the soil. I meant to do just that but didn't recall doing it. Today I realized it wasn't me, but a mourning dove, and yup, she laid and egg. The funny thing is, it is right by the front door.
8/9/24 UPDATE: It is now two eggs. Started going out of the back door to not disturb my little feathered freeloader.

Best laid plans and all that... I took a slow morning catching up on news and phone calls. Plan was to work in the gardens today by noon, seeing as it was to be a cooler day. Well, it rained instead- all afternoon. So I read, watched more news and kind of goofed off today.

Rain all day - Hurricane Debby passing through. So have been & still am on tornado watch. One touched down a couple of hours ago about an hour northeast of here, then we had a brief weather respite, & now the thunder lightning, et al, is picking up again, so guess it's going to be another sleepless, wide-eyed Mantan Moreland night here.

Yesterday we took a road trip. Just went up to Wisconsin. Hubby is looking for a truck, but found a boat lift instead. Stopped at a couple of lakes/marina's and sat by the water. Had a nice lunch by the water. When we got home I went out to the garden and noticed the green beans that the rabbits left are really kicking in. Picked a bowlful and had them at dinner with our BLT's. So good.
I dug out the rose bush I've been threatening for the last few years. It doesn't bloom anymore and it's taking up valuable real estate in the garden, so out it came. We were going to go to the concert in the park, but realized we were too tired so we just ate dinner at home and puttered around a little more until the mosquito's forced me into the house.

Left a little early yesterday afternoon so I could stop at Walmart and buy a few things for the school Christmas store, school supplies that I give my nieces for Christmas and to check out garden clearance. May have went overboard as I ended up with two large glass terrariums for $5 each, 6 6" self watering pot for .50, an extra Fiskars trowel, metal hose repair ends and three balloon plants for $2 each. Lowes yielded one of the darker leaves sedums and a geranium for $6 total. Made it to my meeting and decided to stop at harbor freight since it wasn't quite closing time. Bought one of their soaker hoses as the reviews are pretty good. One of the reviews actually mentioned using it from her water storage barrels, so gave that a shot this morning and it does work where the rubbery soaker hose I have only works best with pressure.
3/4" of rain last night and since both barrels are full I emptied kiddo's pool (which I've been using as a plant soaking station for the past several weeks and dumped the collected water in it. Thankfully I moved it near the rain barrels so I won't have to work too hard to transfer it.
Today hubby gets his first shingles vaccine and we're heading to a friend's for one last playdate for kiddo before school starts.

Righted some pepper and tomato plants that were blown over by Debby. Darn that girl. Added some angled stakes to some of the tomato cages in an effort to keep them from blowing over again.
She's gonna stick around for another day or two. My plants need her rain, but not her huffing and puffing.

Another rainy day so I bundled up the cured garlic into 3 bunches, hung them in their spot from the beam at the edge of the kitchen, kept some heads for neighbors and then delivered to them. 4 houses 2+ hours 'cause you can't just deliver and run.

After the storm of nearly 3"yesterday I have plant reinforcements for corn and tomatoes. I don't know what large gardens have to do after a storm like that. Am thinking probably lose some crops and others not affected. Winds can be bad here.

Yesterday was pretty much a kiddo and I day. We played and did some art projects before she decided that she wanted "me" time of her own after I told her we weren't going for a walk (large black bear has been spotted by neighbors). So I sorted her clothes, getting all the new ones put away, too small stuff sorted out to donate or pass on to friends and went through the tote of stuff I've bought that's still a little too big. Only four things out of the latter tote though I figure she'll probably go up a size in underwear and may need those snow boots this winter. I'm not the kind of mom that has the clothes laid out and ready for the next school day unless it's a special occasion, but I think I'm going to let her choose clothes for the week and see how it goes.
Spent the remainder of the day sorting through some stacks of clothing in the utility room. Ended up with a 13-gallon garbage bag full to donate. Will continue with that today as I'm going to be cooking and the utility room is next to the kitchen.
This morning I am back to watering again. Hand watered in the new garden and ran soaker hoses in the old. Harbor freight soaker didn't work out running from the rain barrels simply because there's just not enough drop. Hooked it to the hose after I unhooked the other one and put in one of the flow restrictors that was included and it's doing just fine. So they'll either be for new garden use only if I'm using the barrels or I'm going to need to increase the drop. Also picked up a few of the plastic replacement hose ends from Harbor Freight as they were $2 and other than the two I bought on clearance, I can't buy a metal one for less than $5. Needed to make another supply hose for laundry sink using salvaged water hose and no leaks when I tested. So I'll be picking up more to keep on hand.

Pulled a few weeds , since the earth is so water saturated, but most of the day was indoors. We made a trip to Home Depot and then started stripping the wood floor in the kitchen. Been wanting to do this since we moved in nearly 15 years ago. The prior owner had put an opaque stain on top of beautiful aged old wood and it had been newly done, keeping the floor well protected. So on a practical level it was easy to leave at the bottom of the to-do list. But from the aesthetic level it is remarkably ugly and shields the beauty of those old boards and has bugged us both. So this is the year! We tested different sections with two different products and different methods and I think we now know how to complete this project. We need to get it done while windows and doors can be left open. Hoping to have it all stripped within a week. We'll see how that estimation goes.

Good news - picked a bunch of tomato(e)s. Got most of them before recent rain caused them to develop huge splits. Whatever was eating the basil and sorrel has apparently left the basil and concentrated on the sorrel. Can you say "Caprese salad for dinner"? There, I knew you could...
Bad news - pulled three pepper plants which were wilting for unknown reasons.
So it goes.

Mainly cooking and laundry yesterday, though I did portion out some chicken breast and vacuum seal them. Also went through the various boxes of quick-connect components and sorted them into one. Restrictor inserts for soaker hoses now reside in the container of extra washers and screens. Put ends on the longest piece of the old water hose too. Sorted more clothes and have another bag to donate. At this point I think kiddo can wear a different shirt every day of the month.
