Wednesday I was outside at 6:00 and discovered I'd left some cardboard outside and it had gotten wet. So the best course of action was to spread it out and cover it with mulch. When we originally spread out the black plastic, I told hubby to go ahead and cover the debris pile from the earlier burned brush pile as I did want to fool with it then. I really didn't want to fool with it now, but it's in the way of progress and managed to scoop and/or spread half of it out in order to lay the cardboard down. Luckily I'd loaded two garbage cans and three buckets of wood chips a few days before, so I had a head start. Approximately 100ft² heavily mulched and I'll probably let it sit vacant this year. Yesterday I was outside by 6:00 again and collected a 2-gallon bag of lamb's quarters, moved seven everbearing strawberry runners to the octagon bed and transplanted a rhubarb plant. Then it was back inside for breakfast and then to mother-in-law's to patch her porch floor in preparation for and epoxy coating. Lots of kneeling and up and down work and my foot was screaming most of the night, so I opted to actually sleep in this morning.

Oh my goodness Mumsey. What an intense and scary event for dad and for you. Amazing that all his tests came back unremarkable. I see where your 'energizer bunny' energy comes from!

Washed windows yesterday- got the outsides done while they were still in shade and then did the insides as it got hotterr and sunnier. Also, while shaded, I mowed and edged one of two sections of native grass in our private garden. I think of this area as our outdoor 'room'. This is an old photo but it looks just about the same. The second section of native grass is towards the back of that first section and around the corner, to the right.

It turned into a very unproductive week here, but I don't mind - I'm somewhat productive most of the other 51 weeks - lol!
Heat continues, & apart from the usual indoor puttering chores, I pretty much enjoyed myself playing with my new fitness tracker. It appears to do everything but one's dishes & taxes. Now if only it could lose the weight for me, it'd be perfect.

Walked X2 today. Did a garden tour and picked more tomatoes. Tomorrow morning I'll be picking more beets, kale and chard for freezing. The peas are near ready to be pulled out and pods saved for drying. Putzed around the house, did some sewing which consisted of cutting off jeans for shorts.
Was planning to go fishing tomorrow with DS, but he can't due to being sick with sinus infection. At least he's getting that out of the way before our trip. LOL. I think I'll just stay home the weekend and walk, do treadmill, clean house etc.

lilolpeapicker, what kind of peas are you planting? I didn't have much luck with fall peas the one time I tried them, but I have plenty of seed... First time doing fall peas so it is a new experience. I am trying the Super Sugar Snap from Pinetree. Finally getting them in today.

McHenry has their Fiesta Days going on. Today is Art in the Par, the big craft show. I promised my granddaughter we would go but I wanted to go early, so we were there 15 minutes early. Found a good parking place, walked up and down the booths. The big thing this year are the crocheted stuffed toys. Lots of booths with them and that's what she wanted. Well some of the prices were crazy for a stuffed toy. Found a booth with decent prices, so she picked one out for her and her sister. What a racket. Usually it's blazing hot, but it was only in the low 70's, so it was bearable. Came home and hit the garden. Picked a few tomatoes that were turning red and a couple of cucumbers. I'm so happy that what ever was eating the cucumber seedlings left at least the two plants alone. I planted more seeds and they are coming along, but not sure if I'll get any pickles. The pot on the deck has a few small cucumbers starting, so I'm a happy girl. I would have stayed out there longer, but the skeeters are horrible.

Our 20% rain chances for today turned out to be an all day rain, slow and steady and at times drizzle. We walked 1.5 miles in the drizzle mid-morning. Pulled beets and planted more broccoli seedlings. Froze the beets and the greens.
Planning to go to Dad's tomorrow to check up on him.

Some friends came for lunch today (one is from out of state). So we started the morning early. While Quinn ran into to town for something he left at the office he picked up chocolate croissants for a quick 'tide us over' 'til lunch (good excuse for a pastry, don'cha think?) and I touched up the guest bathroom, vacuumed the entry and swept the kitchen floor. Then we finished preparing the meal (got most of it done last night). When they got here we toured the gardens, ate good food and had a lovely visit. It felt like Sunday or a holiday, so we decided to take the rest of the day off and just relax after they left, seeing as we were cleaned up for the occasion . Will post a pic of the meal in the 'What's for Dinner' thread on the Cooking board.

Started at 6:00 this morning determined to partially bury a large bottomless flowerpot in preparation for planting mint in the new garden. Dug ot lots of rock and went ahead and tackled the weeds growing where I took the fence down between the new addition. Three hours later I took a break, bid hubby farewell for the day and enjoyed a frittata with ramp sausage, mushrooms and lamb's quarters. By the time I finished kiddo was up and requesting pancakes. Tackled some of hubby's mess in the living room and did a few loads of laundry. Went back out this evening and spent another hour and finished the fence line. Still need to pull those posts but will wait until we get a good rain as they barely budge now.
No rain yesterday or today and we're officially in severe drought while two counties to the west are in extreme drought. Promises of rain next week but not holding my breath.

I feel like I've gone back to work!!! Had to call dr for Dad this morning, he said someone called him late Friday to say he had infection in urine. He had no idea who it was or what they were going to do about it. I called primary dr. It wasn't them who called but they said an order was sent in for antibiotic. OK, then I get a notification that his Rx is ready to pick up. Well, it's not even at the right pharmacy!! Had to scramble to get it to the right one since I had called brother to pick it up and take it to Dad over his lunch time. Come to find out it was the ER dr who called the order in and just went ahead and sent it to the hospital pharmacy. Too many chiefs with their fingers in the fire and this little Indian is left to sort it all out........ Then called step mom and she said Dad took a pill, it's once a day. I insisted she read the label on the pills to me, because I knew it was twice a day. Sure enough, the label says twice a day. Even though he had one at noon, told her he needs another one tonight. Can't be having this surgery postponed!!!!
So the rest of the day, we walked early. Came home to very wet grass. Pruned bushes along the fence line, nine-bark and lilacs. Then went to the front yard and pruned weigela and ivory halo dogwood. Both were going crazy. The Hibiscus is HUGE!!! Trimmed front and back yards. Finally was able to mow, after going and getting gas. Once that was done, got all the garlic down in the garage and cut the stalks and roots off. Went to the tree dump with all the bush debris.
As for eating today, I had tomato/cheese sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Tonight it's ginger fried rice and oven roasted veggies, left over from last night. Oven roasted eggplant turned out very good, seasoned with Kinders no salt herb/garlic and lemon pepper.
OMG I stink like bug spray.........

Felt a little under the weather today, had to lay down after breakfast and slept another couple hours. Definitely helped. Decent rain overnight so no need to water today. Sowed native wildflower seeds in advance of the storm. Assembled my Amazon Deal Days splurge...a tumbler composter, and two raised beds. Anxious for mid to late August to start planting. Locals tell me I should start pumpkin and winter squash indoors NOW! Ok, ok!
Someone remind to relay the conversation regarding native plant guerilla gardening...I'm loving this area.

Worked at the house in town. Deadheaded the row of lavender, weeded between the flagstones in the front yard, deadheaded hollyhocks. Weed whacked the side of the house- I'm working to kill off the Russian sage there by continually shearing them to the ground- it is starting to die back. Slowly, but surely. Just have to keep on it for a couple of years. Then consumed way too much news late afternoon into evening.

Met up with my sister this morning. She has a dress I want to try on for this wedding this weekend. Did not want to have to buy a dress. Luckily, it fits and I have black shoes to go with it. We meet halfway at a thrift shop parking lot, so we went in. Found a a pair of jeans that were 1/2 off, so a whopping $3.75. A few small glass bowls and saucers for under plants. Also found a cute sundress, with the tags still on it for $5.00. I'm not a big dress wearer, but I'll find a some where to wear it.
Came home and cut some more yellow leaves off tomato plants. Trying to get as much out of the garden and into the burn pile as possible. Picked a couple of tomatoes and pulled a couple of onions before the rains came. It looks like it's passed already. Supposed to go out for Taco Tuesday in a little bit.
