Grocery shopping…expensive trip to the tune of almost $300. We seem to be shopping every two (or more) weeks. That’s fine until it’s time to get the groceries to the kitchen. And the store had a lot of “free when you buy” sale items. We continue to take the back way to town. The highway is still closed, but there is work going on. Completion date is 7/31/2024, but word on the street is they are 6 weeks behind.

This hot weather makes me wish. Almost. that I was more of a morning person so that I could get out there in the early AM coolness. If it wasn't for the early mornings, I'd get very little done in the garden.

Out early yesterday and spent time with flowers in the kennel greenhouse. Had a small plant stand in there but moved one of the tables from the holding area back inside and it now houses all of the larger pots of geraniums. Have come to the conclusion that house plants get neglected inside during the summer, so moving them outside under the shade cloth is therapeutic for them I'm sure. Of course I'll have to be diligent about pests when I bring them in this fall.
Hubby came in and said the thrift store messaged him and asked if we could come do a pickup and I said sure as the a/c in the car is ice cold. Other than gas, the only other stop was Walmart for a few necessities as it was entirely too hot. Of course I had to peruse the clearance rack of plants and bought two ornamental purple sweet potato plants for $1 each. I managed to overwinter a green one with a fancy leaf this past winter and it's really putting on a show in Grandma's cauldron.
Realized we're two weeks away from the large yard sale and I've done absolutely nothing to prepare. Thinking I'll probably skip selling kiddo's clothes this year as I don't really want to spend two days sorting right now. I have a few totes of stuff I've stashed over the past year in anticipation and need to get them out and priced. Hubby and I were just talking about how it rains at least one day every year and how we needed to pick up at least one new roll of plastic. Ugh! Definitely not ready.

Early walk yesterday, then to the vet late morning. Mowed the yard after that. Put more broccoli seedlings in vacated areas of the garden. When the onions come out there will be space for the remaining dozen or so. I clocked nearly 6 miles.

I clocked nearly 6 miles. I wish I could esp in the heat; in 90s here for several days. Used to but too many issues happened to squelch that. I figure if I can move I will certainly keep going but not like I have in the past. Besides the dog needs her walk New plantings of peas, maybe zucchini, and green beans happening today.

Went out yesterday and tied up the Sunflowers better. Lost 2. Onions are starting to fall over. All the garlic is finally out. Trying to decide if I should bother planting some bush beans again. I'm sure the resident rabbit would like that. Went for a walk with a neighbor last night. Between the humidity and the mosquitos, I had to take another shower when I got home. Not as hot and humid today, so will get some power trimming done and a few other things done that I've been putting off due to the heat and humidity.

lilolpeapicker, what kind of peas are you planting? I didn't have much luck with fall peas the one time I tried them, but I have plenty of seed...

It's another scorcher here today, so haven't been outside yet. We also appear to have a long line of severe thunderstorms headed this way & supposed to hit in a couple of hours, so decided to take a chance & skip watering since we had 2" of rain dumped on us Monday.
Spent the morning having fun spending money on Amazon for "Prime Day". Not irresponsible spending, but after doing relevant price research on items that I plan/planned to purchase anyway & for better prices. Picked up a number of cookbooks for 40%-50% off that had been on my "Wish List", as well as a couple of things I had on a Xmas list for Mr. Breezy. Also a really cute little well-made birdhouse from the "Uncle Dunkel's" brand. They're artisan handmade in Kentucky & thus tend to be pricey, so I was thrilled to snag a nice one for 20% off. And of course free shipping on everything.
So nothing happening here today besides dropping my checking account a few dollars (which would have happened eventually anyway).

Watered before the heat came on even though there is a chance of thunderstorms this evening. Not too hot but the UV is is high. Planted seeds of three tomato varieties, cucumber, radish, basil and zucchini. According to the Ag Extension I can direct sow corn and beans mid month in August.
Also planted eyes of a couple sweet potatoes that sprouted. If nothing happens I'll just refer to it as the Silence of the Yams.

Not sure where to post this, but today I got to watch a flock of sparrows go through my garden and devour beet greens, cauliflower, seedlings, and practically anything young and green. I have never seen this many birds here and they are here practically every day. Don't know where they came from as no one around here keeps feeders. We are in the middle of a heat wave so of course I have been watering my garden faithfully. I'm guessing the only way to exclude the birds is to cover what I can. What would cause such a population explosion? Any tips or hints greatly appreciated.

Not on the agenda at all we decided, this morning, to go to Lowes and rent a steam cleaner. Cleaned the seats in both cars, the over sized upholstered chair in the living room, and the wool rug on the LR floor. They were all so in need. Also vacuumed the cars, cleaned the dash and other interior things and then washed them. How come it took us all day to do those things?

I see several more tomatoes blushing out there! Way early, but OK with me. The first one picked the other day is ready to eat. Just may have a tomato sandwich for breakfast1!
Yesterday was a trip in the true sense of the word. Got Dad to cardio appt. Almost done with visit and Dad said he was gonna pass out. He became unresponsive and his race drained of all colorant he became diaphoretic. The dr. yelled for help, nurses came in, they lowered him to the floor and put his feet up. Hooked up to EKG. He came to after a couple minutes and didn't know how he got to the floor. BP was very low. Dr. called for ambulance transfer to the hospital across the road. We spent the next 4.5 hrs in the ER. He had been complaining of headache since stress test last week. They did every test imaginable, including CT scan. All came back unremarkable. So it's attributed to transient BP changes and dehydration. He did perk up after he was given a liter of fluid IV. Only change was to reduce BP meds for a few days and see if that helps. So I made a list for Dad to follow for 5 days including BP 2x/daily. Not sure if we ever got the surgery clearance, all info will be sent to primary for decision. Finally got home at 3:30. Had to call neighbor at lunch time to let the Princess out. She did and even walked her! And I never got shopping done as planned.......off to do that this morning. After our walk. It's a beautiful chilly 56*!

Mumsey, scary, I hope your dad is feeling better. madamezil,I feel your pain. I don't have a bird problem, it's a rabbit problem. Spent yesterday caging and covering whats left of the beans. The bush beans are all chewed up but trying to come back, so those are all caged up. The few remaining pole beans are now caged at the base and covered with row cover half way up. It looks like a war zone out there. Replanted some beet seeds because those got all chewed down too. Have a few more tomatoes starting to blush and more of the onion tops are falling over. I started a list of things to do out there this fall. Really need to clean up the raspberry and blackberry patch. Lots of junk growing in there. Mostly buckthorn and wild grapevine. I want to replace a side fence that has been hit a few times by lawnmowers or trimmers a few times. Hubby was given some nice plastic coated chain link fence I can use as replacement. Plan to do a lot more mulching too.
