Lovely day to be outside if you want a sauna. Makes me tired!!! Now we have tornado watch til 8 pm. Not a leaf moving either. Pulled a few weeds earlier this morning. That's it for outside work. Pretty quiet in the neighborhood, no walkers, no dogs barking, little traffic.
Next 2 days look much better.

Yesterday was another hot one. Out early to water and decided to pull softneck garlic. Extremely happy with the harvest as the bulbs are massive! Still have a good bit left from last year so hopefully I'll get some of it in the dehydrator in the coming week. After hubby came home I went back out and cut the remainder of the de Grace pea vines and harvested what seed was left after a certain pea-picking rooster helped himself. Planted ground squirrel beans in their place and went to the new garden and planted a bean assortment in the end of the garlic bed. I've wondered if the thick layer of leaves on that bed might have contributed to the poor hardneck harvest but honestly getting such a great softneck harvest, I think it was just the fact that I started out with bulbils as the soil underneath those leaves was moist and I have never watered it. So looks like my goal for fall is to gather enough leaves to cover every bed. Planned to plant another variety of beans in the old garden but it was almost dark and I was dragging, so into the shower and off to bed I went.
Today we're supposed to get a little break from the heat but it will still be in the 80s. Watering will be my first goal and then if I can find the cordless drill, I'll turn some #10 cans into ornamental pepper pots and prepare to plant more beans. I will say the broccoli plants in the bed where the de Grace peas were have no sign whatsoever of any caterpillars now, so maybe Rocky helping himself to the peas wasn't a bad thing after all.

So this week has been a pretty good week with finishing planting the garden, traveling and such. Yesterday we took a grandson to breakfast for his birthday then returned home to get the day started. While I was involved with the horses sweetheart decided to put some boards above the stall doors with the horses names. When I noticed her standing on two plastic 5 gallon buckets stuck together I said “babe the ladder is right here close.” She assured me that this was no big deal and in the next moment she was laying on the stall floor. Got her up, brushed off and tended to her needs the rest of the day. I never reminded her about the ladder……. 😂
Added update: nothing serious but bruises and body aches. Still no mention of the ladder by either one of us…..

Leeks have exceeded their normal height this year, unlike some perennials! Some are as tall as me, 5'5". I'm an inexperienced selfie-taker.

Early this morning I sectively watered some items, notably lettuce and arugula, which are holding up well in the heat - so far. The BSS is really to be plucked/pulled.
Started 2 Red Rosie romaine and 2 Magenta crisp lettuce. The Magenta does halfway decent in the heat.
Yin yoga - trying to get into a more frequent habit. It's different than the normal yang yoga.
Removed a prototype wasp nest from the top of a shade umbrella. I'da thought they'd build underneath where they'd be more protected, but I'm not a wasp.

Hubby and I went to the flea Market this morning. We went just because. I haven't been to one in many years, anyway, lots of stuff. Saw a guy selling garden art that was cool, but just didn't bite. We didn't buy anything but some peaches. An interesting adventure. Came home to pull weeds. After last nights deluge, I figured weeds would be easy to pull. Found most of the pea vines laying on the ground. I'm guessing the bunny I've seen hanging around is the culprit. Netted whats left. One of the tendrils from the Moonflowers is chopped off too. Caged that up next. Everything else looks good. Only 74 and cloudy out there now. Turned off the air and opened the doors and window.

Hubby and I went to a Farmers market today. Good golly Miss Molly, the prices were astronomical. Green onions were $4 a bunch, a small container of raspberries or strawberries was $9, lettuce $6 a head but worst of all was a one crust crumble topped pie for $38 !! Went home and got out the Crisco and made up some pie pastry-will make a Buttermilk pie tomorrow. Have never made one but the recipe looked good. Just to be fair, I will only charge him $7 for a piece of pie

Went out and walked at 0600, then the treadmill. Humid, The Princess started dragging and slowing down after only 4 blocks so we went only 1 mile. Did all outdoorsy things, filled bird baths, pulled a few weeds. Found Big Kahuna bush beans making beans. Found one big enough to pick, so per our usual ritual, Princess and I shared it. Looks like indoor stuff the next couple days. As soon as the broccoli seedlings get a little bigger they will get to live in the garage in front of window with fluorescent light above them.
I see the beets I planted last Thursday are sprouting, some of the seed was over 5 years old.

Been working in the garden like a mad woman. Sunday was overcast with a threat of rain so hubby stayed home. I was out at 5:30 determined to finish planting the garlic bed with a couple of tomatoes and Corbaci peppers. Ended up plopping some hyacinth beans, walking onion bulbils and a couple of stray snapdragons into the block holes of another bed. Cut off all the peas in the old garden, saving seeds of each variety. Thankfully I already had an ample supply of de Grace seeds as Rocky sure didn't leave many on the vines. Planted ground squirrel beans in their place as dad decided they were the second best bean he'd eaten over the winter. Cut short beans are halfway up the opposite side of the trellis so cut the spring blush peas just in time. Harvested a handful of fresh peas and decided to throw the vines over the fence and let the Rooster finish them off. At one point I noticed he ran off under the bushes and just figured he was spooked by a cat but then he just stood there not moving at all. I looked up and there was a hawk circling, so that explained it. Got the fork and moved the pea vines under the shade tree where he'd feel more protected. Had a bean medley ready to go into the bed where the Lillian's caseload peas were and noticed on one of my trips out of the garden that the fava beans in the bed next to the previous day's pea smorgasbord had no leaves, so harvested the seed pods from those as well. Finished up at 4:30 with my butt dragging and joints aching. I remember the rain starting but evidently it didn't last long as the gauge only showed 1/8" had fallen. Yesterday my body was telling me to stay in bed but I eventually went out at 7:30 determined to work the stiffness out. Went to work on the potato bed, laying cardboard, mulching a path and then making another bed on top of the cardboard. Potatoes may be a little later but should still get a somewhat decent harvest and I'm officially out of cardboard. From there it was to the tote of soil from the washtub planters which is determined to be a bit too sandy. Another washtub had the remnants of the too big or not broken down enough chunks of last year's compost and surprisingly was nice and fluffy with the exception of a few sticks. Mixed it all together and hauled it to the octagon bed where I'm planning on putting some of the excess strawberries. Told kiddo the rest of the day belonged to her so we played with babies and cooled off in the pool a bit. Now I've realized that I still have a small bag of potatoes left and wondering if I ever grabbed the broken down water heater box from the corner of the utility room...

Either way, congrats on the hot tub. Hmmm... Should I blame it on autocorrect, poor eyesight, too small keyboard on phone, or a combination of all? Water was extremely cool, fresh from the hose and into the wading pool.
