Amazingly kiddo stayed outside several hours Saturday and I managed to get stuff watered and connected the soaker hose for a bit as I have it in one of the poorer beds. Hubby managed to get the sprinkler attachment off of one of the hoses mom gave me that her brother was going to toss. Put one of the quick connections on it and now I can reach the holding area from the rain barrel and honestly if I connected the other two hoses from the house, I could probably reach the new garden if necessary.
Yesterday we spent the day with my parents for Father's Day. Made baked steak yet again as dad requested it and evidently he liked it as he had seconds. Made a few trips to Mom's garden to check on progress and steal a strawberry or two. Kiddo, Mom and I played in the shade and on the porch for a few hours.
If you follow the chicken chat thread you know that we now have a pet rooster. I considered naming him Ritzy because he and I devoured a sleeve of Ritz crackers early one morning but I thought with his missing tail feathers and ruffled appearance, Rocky was a more appropriate name. He's very tame and follows me around like a dog. Also very good with kiddo. I do have to close the garden gates now as he followed me in and immediately grabbed the biggest strawberry though.
This morning I woke to thunder and a thirty second downpour which wasn't forecasted at all last night. Pulled a few more weeds from the old garden and then decided to take advantage of the cloud cover and cooler temperatures and laid down approximately another 100 ft² of cardboard in the new garden expansion. Was able to pull the other sheet of black plastic to the holding area too. Was rewarded with another downpour that lasted a bit longer and filled the container at the downspout but then it got hot! I may go back out late this evening but now I'm enjoying some inside time.

Watered the new native grass spouts this morning before it got too hot. Caught up on correspondence later in the morning and remained on call should Quinn need me (he had a tooth pulled with an oral surgeon and we assumed it would go smoothly (which it did) but just in case... I was ready to pick him up should he need it. I had a birthday visit in the afternoon, gave her a tour of the gardens. I sent her home with one of two volunteer Trumpet Vine I dug up a couple of weeks ago and have been nurturing. Am currently babying a volunteer blue echinops (globe thistle)- another drought tolerant fav. They are hard to transplant, but I keep trying and every once in a while one makes it. I have hopes for this one. It looks great in the morning, after a cool night, but it gets witty in the heat of the day, even though I move it around all day to keep it in shade to partial shade.

I got a lot done today, taking advantage of it not being as hot and humid as it will soon be. After doing some shopping early, and dropping off some things to a gardening friend, I came home and weedwacked some, though the weeds haven't really been growing much, due to the lack of water! I pulled the strips of landscape fabric up that the rows of garlic were all planted between, 9 rows between 10 strips. That last time it rained, just 1.22", I turned off the watering to the rows - ideally, about 3 weeks before harvest would be ideal, without water. I'll see if the weather cooperates, and so far, it has, with this lack of rain! In the meantime, I had to re-adjust the watering timers, increasing, due to the heat, and no rain. And the heat is supposed to get much worse.

Since Saturday I’ve been pretty focused on things here a home. Mowed and did little things around here till I thought the ground was dry enough for tilling. Spent Sunday and Monday replanting and first time planting pumpkins and such yesterday. Luckily there’s been a nice breeze to offset the hot temperatures.

Been keeping up with am walking and then treadmill. This morning I started with the inclines up to 10%. I work my way up to 10 then back down over the course of a mile at 2-2.5 mph. Never short of breath, but sweat awful!!! Then brushed The Princess and we both had a shower/bath. Then moved on to laundry and couch covers.
Dad's dr appt yesterday with urologist was not good. Tumor found in bladder, probably cancer. So now we have a slew of appts between now and surgery date in 5 weeks. Also needs to have kidney CT, looking for spreading more than likely. Has history of kidney cyst. Asked him if he was surprised, he said no. Told him this is what happens when you live to be as old as Methuselah.....he laughed. (He always said he's gonna live as long as Methuselah.) Dr. did say it's curable, but we'll see if he's even cleared for anesthesia. And curable always depends on what lab results are after surgery. For now we are just letting him think it's for sure curable. Curable is a loose term, as in manner of removal--removal of tumor and perimeter, removal of bladder, need for chemo/radiation, etc. It's not going to be an easy time for Dad, this is something beyond his control and he always has to be in control. Life is full of challenges, too many at times.

Woke up extremely early yesterday and decided to start tackling utility room. One tote of stuff for thrift store, two totes to sell and finally went through a box of quilting books I was gifted and half of them are going to a lady who is just starting out. Once it was daylight I went out and transplanted the hopi blue corn amongst the fava beans and sowed the county gentleman in cell packs. Watered everything extremely well and went in to shower and get ready for a town trip. Decided other than electronics pickup I wasn't going to the thrift stores as it was extremely hot and wanted to get back home. Found a beautiful geranium hanging basket marked down to $3 at Walmart and of course it had to come home with me. Grabbed a few things and some boxes at Kroger and back home where the thermometer was showing 92°, so stayed inside for an hour or so. Around 4:00 decided to tackle those boxes and pulled a chair under the shade tree and pulled the tape off. It was overcast and thundering and I decided to empty the container under the eaves and refill the one in the new garden and then start in kiddo's pool. Ended up filling one of the 15-gallon drums and half of another before the storm hit and provided a five minute downpour. Today I'll continue emptying kiddo's pool and water everything as it's going to be hot, hot, hot again.
