datgirl, thankfully we don't have the task of sorting through it, his wife and mother are doing that. They're trying to get the apartment cleaned out by the end of the month and we're taking some of it. Brought home a load today and insisted we sort it out as we unloaded. Two garbage bags of stuff will go to the thrift store tomorrow, one bag of stuff broken or worn too bad to donate and several boxes of decent stuff.

Yesterday when I got up, turned up the temp to 69*, it's 66* overnight. Went about my business. Realized it was still cold in the house, furnace wasn't working. Can't hear it in all parts of the house. So I checked to be sure it was on heat mode. Yes. Went to the basement and flipped the on/off switch, turned back on, furnace started, then stopped before the blower kicked in. So I called our energy company for service on our service plan. OK, someone will come out. It got to be later in the day, called them and in the meantime the furnace started working. Kept the appt and the guy came today, looked over the entire furnace, all OK there. Figured it was the thermostat which I had a brand new extra one which we got from the energy company years ago when they used to do energy audits. So it's all good now.
Got tomato seeds out for starting this weekend, watered all who were thirsty. I'm thinking the onion babies are going out next week to spend their days in the driveway and nights in the garage. Today quilted some, went for 2 mile walk. Came home and dug up 6 asparagus that I knew I could find without the map. Had to use hanging plant pots for them, a very extensive root system. These are 2 yr old plants. Tomorrow I'll get the maps out and dig more along with some blue flax. Let the digging begin! North side of house in constant shade still has some frost in the ground so will have to wait on those.

To town this morning to pick up snacks for the Easter party tomorrow. Helped hide eggs for the younger kids who won't be there tomorrow and sorted out stuff for the older grades. We're down a few volunteers and weather is iffy for tomorrow so wanted to be prepared.
Picked up more cardboard but only had time to toss it in the shed. Desperately need to do some major potting this weekend and possibly set up the PVC stand for geraniums.

It was a little of this a little of that kind of day. Did 3 loads of laundry. Simmered a 2 pound bag of organic clementine/mandarin tangerines for 2 hours in preparation for making a clementine cake for Sunday. And then finely chopped the entire clementines- skins and all- so having them well steamed and soft is a must. There's enough for 2 cakes. Froze the second batch for the future cake. Talked with a client via Facetime . And before and after the call worked outside for 3 hours, cleaning up the vinca bed and another section of our feeder ditch (in preparation for water being released from the Mother Ditch (Acequia Madre) in a couple of weeks. I've got probably 2/3 of our ditch cleaned up. Will do the last part this weekend. For some reason, my body is feeling more beat up than the days I did those 5 hour stints. Must have moved differently today.

A list of things to do for Easter and around here. Only thing left to do is make Easter baskets for grandkids. Tomorrow I pick up the Italian beef and the cake. We used to ham for Easter, then realized, none of us really like ham that much and we had just as a tradition. So we still have the traditional polish Kielbasa, rye bread, pierogi, and beet horseradish, but enjoy Italian beef sandwiches more than ham. Potted up a couple more peppers in between, but really not much done in the garden department.

Up at 0500. Decided to start tomatoes. Wrote down how many of each I planted in each container. When I got done, I added them all up. EXACTLY 450, just what I had planned!! Bet I couldn't do that again. Then quilting for a bit, til it got warmer outside. At 11:30 and 45* decided it was time. Went out and started digging more asparagus and perennials. Got about $60 worth potted up. While doing that I thought to go to the basement and turn on the outside water. Woooops, the valve leaks! Fast drip, so put a bucket under it and called my plumber guy. He was here in 20 minutes and fixed it with a new valve. Seems like when it rains it pours, 2 days, 2 problems. Can't wait to see what goes wrong tomorrow....NOT!!! Came in at 2:00, forgot to eat lunch so grabbed a sandwich. Went for a walk, then noticed all the new gravel the snow plow threw in the yard, they just tar and graveled our street in the Summer and went way overboard with the rock. Tiny little things, not easy to get out of grass. Finally got my straight edge hoe and got most of it back to the street. Figured since I was outside I would tackle the darn black plastic in the garden paths that's been whipping around despite bricks on them. Got out some wire coat hangers and made anchors. Called the neighbor to see if she had any extra hangers. Yup. Got 2 paths done, the 3rd one isn't affected by the wind for some odd reason but I'll do it after this next round of rain That's it for my workout today. It's close to O:beer:30.

At 11:30 and 45* decided it was time. 45º is the temp I aim for too, to work outside. 50 is better but depending on how eager I am to start, 45º is very doable. I spent the afternoon at the house in town. Fed the front yard beds, weeded some beds and pruned two very overgrown rose bushes,

Spent the afternoon trying out my spiffy new power wheelchair, and I'm thrilled about how well it gets around in the yard --- and especially the garden! (For what it cost, it had darn-well better!) Cut some asparagus and popped open a beer to celebrate.

The weather was nice out today, except for the fact that it was VERY windy, so I couldn't really do the stuff I was hoping to. So instead, I did some cleaning up on the back porch, then later I went down in my workshop, and made 2 more of those SIPs, using those inexpensive 18 gal tubs I got at Ollie's. I made 2 of them last year, but still had one I hadn't started using, because one of the old and cracking SIPs made it through one more season. I used that as the pattern, and it only took about 3 hours to make 2 of those, though I already had the columns from two that I took apart, before throwing away cracked containers. Those re-used support and wicking columns save a lot of time, and I still have enough of those for 2 more SIPs. Made 2 more Sub-irrigated planters, using the bottom one I made a while ago as the pattern. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Almost finished SIP, just needing the screens cut. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Finished SIP, with the screens in place. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Was out early and did my shopping. Came home and finally got hubby to take the Christmas lights down from the house. Pulled out the dining room table leaves and put the Easter table cloth on. Everything else is ready too. Our beekeeper come out to check on the hives. One is really healthy and one is struggling. Keeping my fingers crossed for the struggling hive.

I did something today that I was going to to yesterday, that I put off to today, because of that wind - re-potted my curry tree, which was starting to get some bad branches, plus that stickiness on some of the leaves, otherwise, I would have waited until May, when I could leave it out, once re-potted (has to stay over 50°). The bay laurel seems to get that at this time of year, maybe because of the increased daylight? Whatever it is, I just took it out and rinsed the leaves off, and let it dry, then started re-potting. I got a laugh out of a neighbor, who was watching me when I was starting out, and later she came over and said she "had to ask" why I was beating the pot the plant was in. I explained to her that the pot was fiber, and the root ball was almost solid roots, which is why I was re-potting it, and I had to remove the "pot". This was really the only way to do it - after a few times, I'll just cut it off, but this pot is relatively new, and I'm relatively cheap! And the plant must enjoy this, as I think it's at least 13 years old now. I cut most of the root ball off, leaving about a 3 qt sized ball left, and that is a 12 gallon pot it's in, so at least 10 gallons of soil! I made it almost like I make seedling mix, but added some organic potting soil I got cheap, that has some worm castings in it, and added a bunch of perlite and granular DE, and a little of that micorrhyzae, and watered the top with some Bt israelensis, like I always do. I also "painted" the cut stems, and the large cut roots with that "liquid electric tape" I get at Harbor Freight - faster drying, and longer lasting, in my experience, than the stuff made for plants, which separates, and doesn't work as well. Tomorrow is supposed to be even better, but after that, more rain, almost every day in the forecast.
