Evidently, seeking psychiatric help has been good for me, I perused the seed racks at Lowe's this morning without feeling compelled to buy more seeds. So far this year I made one seed purchase, a total of three stores, and that was it. I even managed to keep my distance from those subsequent discounts and free shipping offers. I may be cured.
I've been doing little bits of everything, started painting the family room, and hope to finish by Friday. There are a couple of molding strips and some insulation needed in addition to painting. I am making a to-do list of anything I see around the property that needs repair or maintenance or should be thrown away and will take care of it first chance I get.
Yeaterday, I finished setting up the seed-starting rack, tested the timer, and put the trays in place. Onions will be going in this weekend! I have to work on my planting schedule in order to have my plants ready for both my garden and for sale.
We went shopping this morning for groceries, did not need a lot but we have another storm on the way and I prefer to have and not need over need and not have. The Friday forecast is for temps below zero, wind chill close to 40 below, lake effect snow, and very windy. Of course, that's the forecast - it's garbage day! I'll pick up my totes over in the next county somewhere. I've been listening to the local news regarding storm preparedness and what needs to be done in the future since we had over 40 deaths attributed to this last storm. We had plenty of advance notice, roads were closed a bit later than they should have but it was not enforced. I-90 was closed but the trucks detoured through small towns on secondary roads, got stuck, and compounded the problem.

Apparently a tropospheric (as opposed to stratospheric) polar vortex is hurtling around, and will head my way Friday/Saturday. Not that I know the difference between the two.
Texas, Oklahoma, and other states in the are are already suffering from frozen roads.

Covered a bed and then almost all of another. Although there was a thin layer of snow that stuck around this morning, the day was really sunny and there was no wind, which made it pleasant to work outside for a bit. Will have to order a few more bales of mulch hay.
Hose is froze, so had to haul water to refill the chickens heated waterer, something I don't look forward to. The chickens rewarded me by giving me 4 eggs, two from yesterday and two from today, although it might have been one and three, but two is the average. It's a start, considering there are around 36 chickens, although some are over 3.

Yesterday was a day that I can say that I truly accomplished nothing. Sweetheart has me reprimanded to my easy chair and is taking very good care of me. My hand is pain free and I’m looking forward to getting the stitches out a week from tomorrow.

Yesterday didn't go as planned. Dropped off paperwork, visited the thrift store and just walked into Walmart when the school called and said kiddo was sick. So I instructed hubby to get the pet food and I grabbed another cart and grabbed the necessities. I guess kiddo was crying most of the morning but turned into an eating machine once we got home with no signs of being sick. Hmmm... I don't want to say that she was faking but... . She has a field trip this morning to see a production of School House Rock and hoping she will enjoy it. On the seed front, I spied lemongrass sprouts. Somehow I ended up with a pack from Baker Creek and Pinetree both last year and never did get around to planting them. PT pack seemed to have the exact number of seeds while the BC pack had more than twice the 60 seeds because of the irregular germination. Well I'm wondering if all those seeds sprouted because I have a container full of seedlings! Also spied a pink dandelion seedling. Decided to hold off a week or so on the jicama after looking back through my notes. I know I'll need to provide a stake in each individual pot for them to climb while in the house as I don't want to repeat untangling the mess of intertwined vines again. Three varieties of fava beans this year and intending to plant a variety in each garden and one in the backyard bed too. Going to be a busy year!

I don't want to say that she was faking but Sometimes something stresses out a child and they will get "sick" at school. I wouldn't call it faking it, but a survival skill that might be subconcious rather than deliberate. Happened to one of my daughters who was bullied a lot. The way to approach it is to see what may be happening behind the scenes and change things. If you can't change them, help her find strategies to deal with the stressors. It helps if you don't give her the impression you think she is faking it, but rather give her a listening ear and a way to open up about what is happening. Not easy, especially with a special needs child, but vital.

Giving my old fingers a rest again and been making placemats. Weaving/criss crossing black and light mint/green fabric then top stitching. Something we've never had, placemats! But I only had enough fabric for 3 and 2-3 small ones for trivets. Of course I didn't spend any real money for them, it's pillow case fabric. Took lots of thread though, and ran out of the color I was using. And out of stabilizer/interfacing. There's always a sale at JoAnns, today the 2 items I needed were on sale. Thread was B3G3F and interfacing half price.
So decided to go to the big city around 10:00 and get it all done in one trip. DH declined to go. Smart man. Went to JoAnn's, Wally World, Hy-Vee, Aldi, Farm Fleet, Natural Grocers. Natural Grocers used to have eggs for $1.99 with N-Power program, then 2.99, now 3.99 and limit of 2. Walmart's egg prices are upwards of $5. It was extremely windy on the way home. Snow blowing across the 4 lane super slab, but not sticking. On the N-S road though it was a different story. 7 miles of constant blowing and some beginning to stick and drift. Reminds me of how fortunate I am to not have to drive to a JOB every day! We are good for at least 2 weeks. DS said he wants a couple more "clean air" houseplants. Found 2 at HyVee, very nice size, about 18" tall. A Peace Lily and something that resembles philodendron but is bushy. Then at Aldi's they had tons of huge plants for $14.99. Got a Sansiveria. So DS has 3 to choose from, he also wanted ones that don't require a lot of light. These are perfect.
Gave the onions and shallots another haircut today, will be adding those cuttings to stir fry tonight.

Not easy, especially with a special needs child, but vital. I don't believe bullying is the issue as I make it a point to be around the school enough to know what is going on and her classmates are exceptional with her. You don't know how much I'd love to give a listening ear but her vocabulary is still growing and often we don't know she's sick until it's obvious because she just doesn't complain. I've often wondered if having the heart surgery at a young age has resulted in an increased pain tolerance. She is the master of seeing just how much she can get away with and we (the school and I) try hard to judge how she feels by observing her actions. It's totally possible she wasn't feeling well which is why I chose to pick her up. Today went well as the class traveled to town to see a musical production and her teacher and aide said she absolutely loved it.

The mundane news for yesterday is that I did nothing but hold down my chair and wear out the remote. The good news is sweetheart cutoff the hospital bandage and replaced it with a gauze pad and a couple pieces of tape.

Finished up the placemats. Did treadmill. Hand quilted for a couple hours. Went to visit Mrs. J at the assisted living. She seemed in a better space today, good visit. I took her Valentine flowers and card. She was tickled! Had tea and cookies.
After that I stopped at our HVAC guy's office. We have been fighting with Lennox over a part for our ERV, which is only 5 years old. When he called Lennox they said it was obsolete. What???? He is no longer a Lennox dealer since he went out on his own and now is Amana. Told him I would call. I did. 2 weeks ago. Was told the unit itself is obsolete but they still have parts. OK. The part number listed in our manual is also obsolete, but it had a new part number. It was like pulling teeth to get that new part number, but I got it. Good. And I was told they do have parts for that unit. They also said anyone who is HVAC, whether or not they are a Lennox dealer, can order parts. They won't let a customer get beyond the point of actual ordering. So I gave the new part number to our guy. He has been trying to get info on the part and they keep giving him the run around. They said the unit is still made (after they told me it was obsolete) and the part we need is $700!!! But they don't have it. What???? Then he went to their distributor and was told the part is $2000!!! Again, what??? That's more than what we paid for the initial unit, installed! We could buy 2 new units for that. We had always believed in Lennox til now, since they have a manufacturing plant in Marshalltown, and we support local whenever possible.
So I told him I would go into "B" mode and call them bright and early Monday morning. If they don't have the part we need, what is the use of staying with Lennox? Our HVAC guy quoted us a decent price on Amana. We know he's not out to rip us off, we have known him for years and I feel the frustration he has because I've been after them too. He wished me luck, told him I would call Lennox, he's all for it! If we end up having to get an Amana unit, I'll be on the trail of Lennox's CEO with a bill for the part they could not supply. Stay tuned!!
That's all the fun I had today!
