We started the day by dropping our SUV off at the garage though our appointment isn't until Thursday. I figured if it was leaking it would be better to get it there a little early and the shop owner said that they might be able to squeeze it in a little earlier. Currently have mother-in-law's car and we went to look at another car this evening, but after looking underneath it, hubby told the man we weren't interested. I'm not wild about having another vehicle to maintain and pay insurance on but I'm also not wild about being without one.
While in town we stopped at a thrift store where I'd previously handed hubby a copy of Mel Bartholomew's All New Square Foot Gardening a month or so ago and he evidently put it down because it never came home with us. Luckily I found it again and was only too happy to give fifty cents for it. Also bought a 1978 C&P Bell phone book for the area hubby and I grew up in. There's four whole pages dedicated to our exchange and the unchanged numbers of our parents plus those of our grandparents and my great-grandparents are in there as well. I'll probably keep it with my genealogical research. The shop owner also insisted we help ourselves to a mound of free groceries and I was only too happy to get two bags of powdered milk and some dry beans. Hubby snarls his nose at powdered milk but I reminded him of the times it saved us during the pandemic.
We received an automated call shortly after three informing us that busses were being rerouted due to an accident and to expect delays. Kiddo ended up getting home 30 minutes late and informed me that she wanted beans for supper. Never known a kid to have such an appetite for pinto and great northern beans and luckily I had some leftover in the fridge from the weekend. She has a half-day of school tomorrow and then is off until January 3rd. It will be nice to turn the alarms off for a while.

I've already ordered seeds from 3 places - one, from BC yesterday, when they had one od those deals they often have, at this time of year, and there were 4 things I wanted from them, and was waiting for a deal! And in the evening I got an email that it was shipped!! And I got one of my other orders in 5 days. Yet I here all these others complaining about not not getting some orders in over a month. Most things I won't be planting anytime soon, except for the few things in the hydroponics.
Today I got up early (for me!), and got to lidl when they opened at 8 am (takes about 22 min to get there). Butter was $2/lb, with no limit noted. Everywhere else it's at least double that. Eggs were $3.27, which is lower than they've been in a while, and I needed more for cookies!

Gas is $2.85 and diesel is $3.65 at the rez, filled up everything.
My dentist's office called to cancel today's appointment so I gave Gunner a bath instead. His tub is in the apartment and we don't use it much so I decided to flush the water heater afterward since it hasn't been done in a while.

There were other teachers who should never have been teachers. The first serious physical abuse I ever saw was delivered by a nun in a 4th grade classroom. She would carry a ruler around and hit kids on the hands. That was mild compared to the time she grabbed one poor boy by the ears and violently shook his head back and forth. She would also take 'bad' kids out of the room and you could hear them screaming. The school administrators (all nuns and priests) had to have known. That nun should have been in prison, not a classroom. In our community years later, there also were a couple significant occurrences of grievous priest 'misconduct' made known. My mom was an Indiana farm girl. She used to tell us how the nuns at the local catholic school used to make fun of the poor farm kids. The mere fact she remembered it and related it more than once means it must have been bad. Mom was not a complainer.

She would carry a ruler around and hit kids on the hands. That happened to my dad and his hands were bruised when he got home, they hurt too bad for him to finish his chores. Grandma went to the school the next day and beat the hell out of the nun responsible, then transferred dad to public school afterward.

Good for your mom martywny We heard about the ruler thing but that seemed to only happen in the Catholic school . In Catechism classes the nuns were less aggressive, but maybe that's because the classes were held in one of our homes- we were a small minority in public school.

My third grade teacher was a screamer. You could hear her screaming through the whole school. One particular day a kid did something wrong and when reprimanded he said well "so-and-so can do it" to which she replied that so-and-so was her pet and proceeded to name all her pets in which I was one. Really surprised me as I didn't like her. In junior high our science teacher was really nice but he had no tolerance for disrepectful teenage boys. More than once did we see him lift up the desk with a student in it and slam it on the floor. In high school one history teacher was also not fond of disrespectful boys and when one ticked him off he wasn't shy about letting them know.
In elementary school we were pretty much all poor but we never really knew it. I was one of six classmates that attended the rural junior high instead of going to town for school and found myself among strangers and experienced bullying for the first time. My second year there a classmate who had failed a year was at the same school and everyone liked to pick on her because she was slow. She became so paranoid that anytime someone whispered she would be in tears because she was sure they were talking about her. More than once I reassured her that she was better than those who were taunting her. Unfortunately when she turned sixteen she quit school and is one that I've always wondered about over the years. In high school we were the lesser class because we came from the rural school. We'd often be pointed at and called by our school name. There was another smaller junior high in the county and years later I discovered they received the same treatment. I vividly remember being in one class and a friend commented that we were thrown in with a class of dullards to which I turned and remarked that I'd known several of those "dullards" since kindergarten and considered them as equals since I felt more comfortable around people who didn't constantly brag about how smart they were.

I remember Catechism classes with the nuns. They would walk around the room with a ruler in their hand, tapping it on their other hand and occasional slamming a desk with it for emphasis. I don't recall any real contact with kids' hands though. She made us afraid that if we crossed a certain line we would go to Hell. When I got to 12 or so I refused to ever go to that church again. I chose my own later.

Got to looking at the stash of canned goods. Time to make more veggie soup. So I got busy. A 21 quart canner about 2/3-3/4 full. Ended up with 14 quarts pressure canned plus a pint or so left. I found that I didn't freeze enough corn and that DS got most of it. So went to the store for some frozen. Backed the car into the garage, easier to get out if necessary if there's much snow.
The snow has arrived, so we are in for the duration. Whatever we don't have, we don't need at this point. Still not sure if DS will make it here on Saturday, though it looks a little better. He's braver and younger than we are!
I have started writing the pattern for the Star Steps quilt and made brownies while having to stay in the kitchen for 2.5 hours to babysit the canner. Went for a short walk, The Princess started limping, ice in feet, cleaned it out and went home. Haven't gotten her booties out yet.

Started wrapping last night and have most of the small stuff finished. Down to three rolls of paper, so may pick up a couple more. Kiddo picked out an elf hat for my dad and striped Santa hats for me, hubby, my mom and aunt and of course we'll all wear them on Christmas day. Last two gifts are scheduled to arrive today but the tracking isn't indicating it. Spent about an hour sorting and organizing craft supplies and have all the wooden Christmas ornaments packed up and ready to put away as I don't intend to do any more. Last month I'd bought a yard of teal fabric to use as a border on some blocks I bought at the thrift store and when I got home I decided I should have went with the lighter one. As luck would have it, Goodwill had some grab bags of ugly sweater kits and I was drawn to one with some mini Christmas ornaments and just happened to notice it also contained a precut yard of the lighter teal fabric, plus it was 50% off so I grabbed it for $2. Now have the fabric and blocks bagged up and ready to start on after the holidays. I believe I can get two baby quilts out of them. Also gathered the jelly roll race quilt I did with the guild and need to find a backing for it as I decided it will be a charity quilt too. Just need to gather string quilt blocks and I think that will be enough to get me through spring. Still need to start on the table runner for mom as I've decided on a pattern but I think I'll add an additional block as her table is longer than most.

Ran into Menards to pick up a suet cake for someone and they were taking the Christmas displays down. Walked past the candy display and the Valentines candy is out. Easter can't be far behind.

It's ridiculous. Although, I'm sure the seed display will be out soon and that's OK.

We went shopping at the Broadway Market this morning for our traditional Polish sausage and had to wait in line for about 45 minutes. The market was not at all busy and many booths were closed, but the meat counter always has a line. Stopped at our daughter's house to drop off something for one of the grandkids and then headed to the grocery store. Grocery shopping reminded me of the Florida stores you see on the news just before a hurricane. The parking lot was full, no shopping carts, many items out of stock. We picked up what we needed and went through the self-check with no wait.
I did some securing of things that can self-relocate during 70+ mph winds and now it is time for mother nature to show us what insignificant beings we are! I think we've all accepted the fact there will be no get-together this year until after Christmas.

So we got the call yesterday afternoon that our transmission issues were just a loose connector and it was fixed and transmission fluid topped off. Tech told hubby that back brakes were pretty worn which we knew and were planning to tackle next. So on a whim hubby asked what they'd charge to replace all brake pads and do the state inspection too and the price they quoted was more than reasonable so they called this morning and said it was ready. Total bill was $300.31 which was more than half of what we expected. This is the little Ford dealership in the county we grew up in and we'll likely be giving them more of our business in the future.
Mother-in-law wanted us to pick up stuff from Walmart and we ended up running into my uncle and his wife who immediately started ranting about my recently deceased uncle and we just kept walking with her screaming and cussing behind us. We heard the call for management and don't know what happened after that as I just wanted to get away from them. From there we stopped and bought two bales of straw and later made sure all the animal houses were ready for the low temperatures. Dropped mother-in-law's car off, picked up kiddo and headed home. We decided against getting another car as we had trouble getting mother-in-law's car up our driveway without dragging, so looks like we'll be searching for another SUV in the spring. Just glad to have our vehicle back before the winter storm hits.
