I saw my first fawns this morning. Newly born, tiny cat-sized twins. Absolutely adorable.

I saw my first baby goldfish in the little pond. An inch long, grey in color, 3 of them, though surely there are more. I hope not too many. I saw mating behavior a while back so this isn't a total surprise.

First Japanese Beetle of the season…in my yard, at least.
edit…I went back to June of last year in this thread. Appears as if those beetles are right on schedule. Darn.

Yesterday evening I enjoyed my first "taste" of my first-time-growing watercress!! All the heat, humidity, & rain gave them a sudden boost which made the large terracotta bowl they're in suddenly look very crowded, so I "thinned" out a few seedlings & sampled them right then & there.
At only 1"-2" high, they were tender & already had that peppery/spicy watercress bite. Can't wait for them to get a little larger so I can start using more of them in salads & tucked into sandwiches.

I saw my first leaf cutter bees in their homes today! I've been watching it closely, and I saw several today - I don't know how they all appeared on the same day?

Although Mr. Breezy saw one a couple of weeks ago, today I saw my first Box turtle of the season.
Was on my way to town for a quickie grocery trip to Walmart. Had to take a roundabout way to get there, as a huge tree had fallen across the main road to town & everyone had to turn around & go another way. I had no idea where I was, but figured if I just kept turning right I'd end up somewhere closer to town, & I was right. What was nice was that I was able to save a tiny little Box turtle from becoming roadkill. I drove past it & at first thought it was a small rock, as it was smaller than my palm. But as I went by, I saw its little head peek out, so then had to quickly try to find a place to turn around on the narrow serpentine/corkscrew road & get out & move the turtle across the road without becoming roadkill myself.
But it was worth it.
It's sad how reduced they now are in numbers. Used to be we couldn't leave home without helping several across the roads around here, not to mention all the smushed ones we sadly used to see. Now it's rare to come across them. There was a news article a couple of months ago about how they're now becoming endangered in much of Virginia due to both poaching & habitat decimation. In fact, it's now illegal to keep them in captivity unless they've been captive-bred & you have documentation to prove that. I was absolutely thrilled to find a pair actively mating in my "tadpole puddle" last year, but as of yet haven't come across any on our property this year.

Honestly - far, far too many people are sick, sick, sick. What gets me is that even if people think that the turtle is actually just a rock in the road, why would you purposely drive your car over a rock rather than avoid it?
