We've always been turtle helpers, constantly stopping to help them cross the road safely. None spotted here yet but hubby always walks the meadow path prior to mowing as we had spotted one there several times last year.

Found the first squash bug eggs on two of the pumpkin plants. There was a squash bug on one of the plants as I was checking the leaves. Got rid of her quick. I'll be checking daily I guess.

First. . . tomato of the season!! Yesterday evening picked my first ripe tomato - a "Green Zebra"! I think this is the earliest I've ever had a ripe tomato appear. It was perfect - gently soft with a lovely yellow blush & the requisite green stripes, & an all-green interior. Tangy & tomatoey. Sliced it into six thin quarters & topped our dinner salads with it.

At only 1"-2" high, they were tender & already had that peppery/spicy watercress bite. That is one spicy plant. It's so strong-flavored to me, it would rip my tongue out. I picked my first blueberries today, about 3/4 cup in total, not counting the ones I ate. Congratulations! I ate the last of mine yesterday. Now it's time to prune them. My first Rudbeckia in front is blooming. This one is Prairie Sun with the yellow petals and green eyes, from home collected seed. These have been protected with bunny-excluding 'wire' cones. Unprotected variety Indian Summer in the adjacent bed have been severely damaged.

First Locust shell found this morning. I haven’t heard them…it could be my tinnitus drowning them out.

I heard our first Cicada yesterday morning, coming from a small stand of Hemlocks in our front yard.

Today I removed my first Tomato Hornworm of the season. A big ugly one (although they are interesting-looking in a way). Feasting on the leaves of my potatoes.

Found my first Tomato Hornworm. Very small one, surprised I even saw it. It was just getting started, but did enough damage that I just happen to see it. One down.

I often mention about going around the back four…usually I use the path starting on the southwest part of the property, check the poison ivy crop, check the progress of the Redbud tree, look for any newly sprouted Locust trees, up the hill and around the loop, and then back the way I came from. If I don’t take the path of the loop, I can continue on the path and come out on the east side of our property. This part of the path includes a ditch crossing, surfaced with rocks. A rough crossing, so I gotta go easy. By mid summer, the area of the crossing has tall weed/grass growth on both sides. (Might be monsters in there ). For whatever reason, I drove the full path a few days ago, and as I came up the hill, I see a first. Our plum tree has fruit. Pretty good for not having a “suggested pollinator “. At one time, it had the “suggested pollinator “. But one died, the cage protectors with the name tags were removed (not by me, I might add ), so I don’t know which one died. The trees came from Stark Brothers…when I was in the mood to find a set of these plum trees, they never had both varieties at the same time. Hubby is no longer interested in planting fruit trees.

when visiting relatives in the midwest, we used to delight in catching fireflies in the evening. I hope we turned them loose, but don't remember.
The other day I saw the first roadrunner in a few years. He was under the peach tree with its falling fruits. Not sure if he was after the damaged peaches, or the various critters that were also there for a free meal. A long time ago I saw one carrying away a young snake.

Our fireflies stiil abound, making me think that I've seen a a meteor, that I really haven't. Shame on me! I haven't made a BLT yet this year. [hangs head, in shame]
