My second seeding of brussel sprouts for the fall garden also failed. I was really looking forward to them - finally - with Brownrexx's tulle fabric idea as I had always grown them nicely - but with an aphid issue that was like 50 aphids per sprout, and trying to burrow their ways into the sprout, it was too much to try to clean up. I thought I had it this year - but now they haven't sprouted!
I've been keeping them - the unsprouted seeds - with my fall veggie trays downstairs.
I was wondering if I tried to direct seed them in the garden if they would do well with the warmer temps and direct sun and grow a little more quickly during august - or if I should just give up on them for this year?
I've had good germiation with these before, but have only been seeding 2 seeds at a time and now I'm thinking I will paper towel method more of those...
first frost is 10/24, I'm trying to fnd my packets to see what they say on days to maturity...

I've got 2 kinds
long island improved - 85 days
falstaff 95 days.
98 days to the first frost - so cutting it a bit close. They are pretty hardy, and I can do some plastic sheeting to cold frame it up a little a bit for an occasional too cold night....

Gave up on those years ago. Just not worth the space here IMO. I do love them though. So I just buy frozen in the bag, or fresh once in a while. Rarely see them at farmer's market.

I had to give up on them too. First year I grew them they were fantastic. Every year after that, the little heads just never formed. The plants got tall and had the beginnings of the sprouts but they just never formed. I took a break from them this year, maybe give it another try next year. We'll see. Good luck Tbird. They are sooo good straight from the garden.

Thanks! In perpetual hope, I put 4 of each kind into a wet paper towel, into a baggie, onto a sunny windowsill - in case it helps! They just got an hour or so of sun. If these don't hatch, then something must have happened seed-wise, and I will give up for this year and try next with fresh.

Don't they say the flavor improves with frosts for Brussels sprouts? I hope so... I planned on that!

tbird - you are going to need that tulle for cabbage too.

yes! brownrexx! Welp - as others had mentioned, the fall garden has gotten to be bit of extra work right about now. I have 3 trays in the lights area to keep watered, but hopefully, next home depot trip, I can pick up one of those auto turn on, have 3 bottom trays for watering, and then just go down 1x per day or every other or so.... but - will be looking to plant this lot out around the 15th-25th, depending on the 10 forecasting. So not a lot longer. I have not had a lot of luck in getting lettuce going for the later part of summer/early fall outside. I have tried both direct seeding and hatching in the papper towel method and putting those out. I water 2x per day, sometimes 3 if I can cuz it is hot out there. temp may not be the only thing - just went outside to check and found a slug where I thought I had some pull through! there may be two crispinos out of about 100 seeds I put outside (both dry and just sprouted) so, I guess the lesson learned is to put out 2-3 week starts and/or save them for fall.

One out of the 8 brussel sprout seeds has hatched. That was yesterday and I expected maybe another one today, but only the one. Will keep them in paper towels for the rest of the week, but one is better than none, and hope it makes it!

I hate to say this but it's pretty late to be starting them from seed. I usually start my seeds 6 weeks before planting them outside and remember that when it gets cooler and the days are shorter that they will grow slower.
I will be planting my cabbage seedlings outside next week. I don't start them from seed. I buy them from a greenhouse but they will probably be at least 6 weeks old already.
I am afraid that you may not have enough time left to see any Brussels sprouts form on the plants.
