This year was my first for planting nasturtiums. I generally avoid reds, golds, and orange colors in my flowers. But I got interested in planting some Nasturtiums this year. We had stopped at an old hotel in southern Iowa and had lunch. The dining area opened out to a small flower garden and there were Nasturtiums blooming...I guess that is what got me interested.
I ended up buying Empress of India from Johnny's. It's heirloom, so I can save seed. And it it the most beautiful color of orange. When in the sunshine, it almost glows. While the plant growth is less than what I expected, I think a lot of that can be blamed on the gardener. The summer isn't over, and I have hopes that it will respond to a little love.

Isn't it funny how we avoid certain colors until we see something that wow's us?!
I love Empress of India. And nasturtiums are edible too! Add a few flowers or leaves to your salad. The seeds- when young and green can be used as a capers substitute.

I grow them once in a while, did some this year in tubs. (They are wonderful rabbit food!) They are very nice with the bush morning glories that are blue.

I am growing Alaska Mix Nasturtium this year. I am opposite of you, binny. I love gold and orange flowers more than other colors.
I am still undecided about the nasturtiums. They look fantastic early in the season, but don't seem to like the extreme heat we have had recently. The flowers are pretty, but the melt in the rain. The Alaska Mix has beautiful leaves.

I usually have some that reseed but now that I think of it, there were none this year. I love the orange ones too.

As hot as it has been, mine are doing well. The tubs they are in are in mostly shade. I do have to remember to water them, no rain for a few days!
