Had this question in the seed forum, but no response: Will saved carrot seed grow into relatively decent carrots or will it grow into off types like squash do sometimes? I need to know whether to pull the blooming carrots I missed last year, or wait and harvest the seed.

I've had volunteer carrots grow.
It's a hit-and-miss.
Some were orange and edible, others weren't.

Might depend on if the variety was OP or not? I have volunteers here and there and one I am letting go to seed at the community garden.

If the plants are hybrids, any saved seed will give a variety of offspring. If they are a standard variety and no other carrots of another variety in bloom near by they will likely come true to type. For no more than I spend on carrot seed down to the garden store, I have to ask, why bother saving seed? You need to ask if you want to experiment? That is a big part of the enjoyment of gardening, to see what we can grow.

I have heard that they can be pollinated by Queen Anne's Lace. Could be a problem if there is a lot in your neighborhood.

I might let them bloom a while longer as they are attracting a lot of different pollinators.
