I buy the cheap onion sets at the farm store and usually under 10% go to seed. This year it is closer to 50%. Did I get a bad bunch this year, or is weather a big factor?

I'm thinking it's weather. I have never had my onions go to seed, here in this arid environment. Occasionally, just a very few will start to flower, but I am harvesting before they set seed.

I had more than usual go to see also, and I planted onion plants. It has to be the weather, maybe they grow too fast and bolt? So far I am not impressed with onions this year. They are not as large as they should be. It's interesting how every year there is something that is not all that great.
I'm thinking this will be the year of beans, squash and cukes.

When I see those onion seed heads popping up, I just lop the flower off. Usually the plant will make a bulb anyway.

A lot of mine went to seed too. I think it was the weather too.

I had quite a few go to seed as well. They were good plant starts from Dixondale. I also had rot from all the rain, especially in the white onions but only at home, not in the raised beds downtown. My neighbor who grows for market is having the same problems.

It's the weather.
If we get a lot of cool weather after you plant your starts or sets, and then it gets warm, the plants will think that they have been through winter and that they are now into their second year which is when they go to seed. Onions are biennials.
This is how I "tricked" my artichokes into blooming the first year when normally they only bloom in their second year. .

Makes sense, BR. We had a very cool spell a couple times in May.
