With all the rain my garden has been overtaken by grass. I was searching for onions today & found the outer layers are getting soft. Do you think I should pick them & try to dry them or with the outer layers decaying should I chop & freeze or something? I'd like to dry some for storage but if they are going to go bad anyway I'd be better off to do something with them now.

Once the outer layers start to decay, it will affect the whole onion. I would freeze what I could salvage. If you have lots of them to chop, fill your kitchen sink with water. Place cutting board in sink, cut the onions under water. You won't get all teary-eyed!

We got quite a bit of that this year as it was raining when the onions needed to be drying. Pull them now, they will only rot further.

I would chop them up for the freezer if you are seeing rot on the outer layers.
