You should try the shiitakes. You can buy plugs online and then just drill holes in fresh oak (or preferably red oak) and coat the log with wax. They too are easily recognized and of course you planted them.

johnrf if you want to tag someone, don't leave a space between the @ and their name. Go in to edit at the upper right of your posting and remove the space and then it will work fine.

there have developed sooo many mushroom foragers here, that the forests are virtually stripped clean all the time. one can take a 'class'/walk to learn paying high buck for it. there are many medicinal mushrooms: miatake comes to mind. they sell those here, I used to purchase and eat $7/lb -they're bitter- I don't eat mushrooms much anymore or for now. chantarelles are very abundant here - my g/f came home with bags and bags of them one year, she had me over and we made mushroom everything! it was fun the mushroom people at the Saturday market grow lions mane, pretty cool lookin', never tried it.
