is this a honey bee? Today, out of the blue - there were dozens of them buzzing about my sorrel.

I've been away for a few days. It's a honeybee.

is it?? the devils! lol! stealing my nectar and giving the honey to someone else! I wonder where they came from - if someone started up a hive nearby - or if they are "wild" honeybees? Haven't heard of them in the city before (wild honeybees) so not sure if they exist around hereparts. but I'm just teasing, I'm happy to share the flowers with them! there is a spot on the southside that has a bunch of honey hives going on - but that is like 10 miles away, so I don't think it is that. It was interesting in that I usually have a variety of buzzers out there - but that morning - only these, and in quantity. Thanks for the ID!

Honeybees will usually travel in a 2 mile radius from where they live. Glad to see that you are getting some bees.

Yes, its a honeybee. Honeybees are kept commercially by beekeepers, however they also swarm out and some of the bees go off elsewhere and set up housekeeping in another spot. I have seen wild colonies in old trees, old houses, a hole in a rock, and other places. Yes, it is very likely they may be found even in the city. Enjoy!

I was googling around, and it says that you have to register your bees in the state of Illinois - is that common elsewhere too?

I see plenty of honey bees (and other types of bees) in my urban yard. I most often see the honey bees in the clover in my lawn, although I also see them on the goldenrod.

you have to register your bees in the state of Illinois It's voluntary here but ours are registered with the PA Dept. of Ag and we pay $10 per year for the license. They come and inspect our hives about once every other year.

I guess I can't set something up and hope they swarm it then!

I am sure each state has its laws regarding keeping bees. I am a registered beekeeper in Utah, but can't remember any inspectors ever coming to look at mine. About wild colonies...... I hate them. They usually have some dieease that is not treated and will be spread to managed colonies as the wild colony collapses to the disease and the other bees rob the nest. If I find wild bees, I take a can of insect spray and kill them. Plug up the hole if possible.
