something seemed......odd. the black seeded simpson started bolting a while ago, some of these were already shot up by about 18-24" and while I had harvested a bit at the beginning of bolting, I had already given them over and moved on to my butterhead lettuce for yesterday's salad... but as I was pulling, the leaves seemed so thin and delicate - I had to give them a taste before discarding. As I had suspected - they were fine! I still pulled them all up, but there was a tuft of leaves at the top of each that I snipped into a colander for the salad. They were all good! I had some more at another location I thought I would add too, but when I snipped the first one, the leaves were noticeably thicker, so luckily I took a taste before adding them in with the other - they were horrible! so - I wonder what happened. Why were these so nice even though they were well into bolting, and the others were not? Anyhoo....just a short story about gardening instincts at play. For the salad, I thought they needed a bit of a substantially flavored dressing because they weren't as fine as maybe before bolting - so I made a strawberry vinaigrette that really suited. I didn't have much for the salad, but topped the lettuce with shredded carrot and beet and pumpkin seeds. It all went together very nicely, I thought.... Time to make dinner, but I want more salad!

My b-s simpson do the same thing. It's one of the reasons I love this lettuce so much. I can be picking those early plants well into July and sometimes.

It hasn't happened for me before. Maybe all this rain and frequent cool spells did something good.
