I did the beans and the second planting of zucchini - I only had 2 seeds left of black beauty zucchini, so - we'll see. I know I had other varieties so not sure if I should dig that out, or wait a week or two and see if any of those two poke through. I am only looking for one. I also planted some saved seed from white patty pans. I think it was 2 years ago, and I think that was the only summer squash that year, so I saved thinking it was likely true. Of course, even if I had no others to cross, a neighbor may have had. Also - the seeds were kind of small, and I'm not entirely sure if they were viable.....so - a lot of ifs!!!! As I had only 1 okra survive, I planted 5 more seeds. so - I think I'm done planting the summer garden? Here is the line up: Tomatoes Tomatillos Eggplant peppers - red marconi, jalapeno, hungarian yellow wax cukes zukes okra plus lettuce, kale, and chard and some herbs. it doesn't seem like a lot! but it is taking up a lot of space my principle goals are: Salads salsas stir fries and curries. gumbo with the okra. i did not plant corn or potatoes, but may do another year. I also skipped winter squash and melons this year. Am I missing something? I feel like I am missing something I should have planted....

I don't see anything missing but we still have the Fall garden to look forward to. Sit back and enjoy the summer garden for now. When it cools off, you can plant more salad fixins.
I Planted a red leaf lettuce in the Spring that has been fabulous and did not bolt even in this high hear and humidity. I'll check the variety. Maybe you will want to try it in the Fall. I know that I will plant it again.

soon you'll get to enjoy all the bounty of your hard work! i sure hope so! very little is close to harvest.....I'm going to sample the chard tonight. I think it may have been too stressed when transplanted and got that chaulky feel to it. Leastwise, it seemed so raw, going to stir fry tonight and see if it is good cooked. There are some micro buds on the zuke, so - once that get going, they do tend to be rather quick.

It is an heirloom called Red Salad bowl so I guess that I'll let it go to seed and I'll save some seeds. I don't usually save lettuce seeds but if it goes well, I'll send you some.
It is really pretty dark red oak leaf shaped leaves with no bitterness.

tbird, that sound like a good summer garden. You should have some great meals.
I love red leaf lettuces. I've planted red sails last year and this year. Also slow to bolt. I had lettuce into August last year! (I planted in a shadier area of my garden)
I always collect seed. It's so easy to do.

I just realized that you don't have any green beans on the list. Do you like those? You can still plant them. Mine are flowering now but I will plant a second crop in a couple of weeks.
I plant a short row of green haricot vert and a short row of yellow Roquencourt which are like skinny wax beans. It looks pretty to steam them together.
We don't like frozen beans so I plant just enough for fresh eating. They are good in stir fry too.

I planted some red leaf lettuce from starts last year - it was tough - eating - not pleasant to eat, like: ummmm what.....kale raw...?
I wont grow it again. I see plenty of other CG gardeners growing it, it LOOKS really cool

I don't usually save lettuce seeds I have been, and I just transplanted some of my container grown lettuce to an under-used bed against the fence to let it go to seed. If you do save some, I'd like to give it a whirl.

Yes! Good one james, I'll put some of those quick little white ones in this weekend! Maybe some carrots too. I do have a short row of beets, and some broccoli that I forgot to mention.

I planted some red leaf lettuce from starts last year Lettuce is one of those crops where if they get stressed at all, they get tough/bitter, and it really is ruined - after conditions return to favorable the taste doesn't change. It's one thing I would never buy as a start. if they got very wilty do to a missed watering onces, or too hot on transport, etc. they are negatively changed for the duration. Don't count out the variety, but do try some from seeds. I think that your climate is much better for lettuce than mine is.

I just realized that you don't have any green beans on the list. The beans I recently planted are green beans - well - some are purple, but same deal. I almost pulled them out today! on my first trip to the garden in the AM to take the dog to potty spot, I saw a tall plant - maybe 5-6 inches where I had planted the beans, and I thought is was another of those tree sprouts coming up. I'm pretty sure I checked the area last night and there was nothing there. I haven't found my glasses yet this morning. I was about to pull it up, when I thought well let me take a quick closer look at it, and I crouched down to get it into nearsighted range and surprise! it was the beans! I had forgotten how they make a dramatic and quick appearance.....just like weeds! the only dry bean I planted was the aduki this year, I haven't seen them come up yet, but I'll take a look when I go out for my real garden tour. I took today off work again, and I didn't roll out of bed til nearly 11! I don't know what happened, I usually wake up by 8 no matter what! Lol - it is after noon and I am still on my coffee!
