one help id without a photo?
when I saw the second one nearby, I ran in for my camera, but they were gone when I got back out.
It looked almost exactly like a firefly, only it was darker, the entire body was a very dark/blackish color and had one orangey strip across the forehead area, and had thicker - maybe a bit longer - dark antenna.
I've googled around, but can't find it. It was not a squash vine borer, any ideas?

Did you google a picture of A SVB and is that what it looked like? They look more like a moth.

I know what they look like, this one looked exactly like a firefly, about the same size, slightly different coloring. all black with one orangy strip foreheadish area.

Description sounds like a Boxelder Bug. If so pretty much harmless. Spray with a soapy solution to take care of it.

thanks john, googled that up, but not it. looks like this, but all very dark/blackish - the entire body and head, and then just the one orangy streak between head and body. I will try to keep my camera with me today in case I see it again.

That looks like a lightning bug to me and hubby. My first sighting was 6/17. But I think they were here a few days before.
Let me see if I can find one out there.

Appears to be some type of firefly. Not all fireflies light up/flash and they usually appear about this time of year.
