What is the oddest volunteer plant you have had? For me this year it was a strawberry plant that sprouted amongst a pineapple I had planted. No idea how it got there.

Asparagus. We have lived here nearly 8 years. The neighbors have an asparagus bed, probably 100 feet away. Never had any volunteers until this year. They are everywhere! Kept pulling them out and more show up. So I decided to dig them up and give them their own bed, I have always wanted asparagus! I guess it was meant to be!
Used to have Blood Dock plant, probably 5 years ago. It's related to red-veined sorrel I think. Anyway, I cleaned up the bed where it was and moved the mulch elsewhere. This year I see 3 of those things growing where I put the old mulch! They really catch your eye.

I had a cantaloupe spring up in a flower bed one year. I think it came from the compost. It had one melon that never ripened. It was pretty shaded where it poped up.

2 pineapples are sprouting from my compost. I pulled one out not knowing what it was, but I am leaving the second one in place. I'm curious to see what it will turn into.

I have mustard greens in my walking onions. The mustard was on the other side of the garden last year and I thought I had collected all the seeds. Must have dropped a few.

This past Monday, I had to put down my beloved Chocolate Lab, Holly... She would have been 15 in September. And, of course, she was the best, smartest, sweetest doggie in the whole world!
Anyway, while I was out and about weeding today, I came across three Holly tree seedlings in different spots in the yard that I had not seen before. I just thought that was kind of neat...

I'm sorry to hear about your sweet Holly. It is so difficult to make that choice, even when we know it is for the best.
Odd volunteers? I had a daffodil sprout in a place I definitely did not plant it. I'm thinking a critter carried it off and dropped it (too big for her, perhaps?)

Ahntjudy, so sorry to hear about your Holly. I feel your pain. The volunteer Holly is meant to be, a way to remember your best friend!

Absolutely meant to be to find the holly volunteer at this time. If they weren't in a spot that you wanted it I hope you moved it to a place where you can see it well. Sorry to hear about your canine family member. This year I have pole bean volunteers popping up around the garden....like in with the potatoes and broccoli, different spots. I guess I must have dropped some last year.

Apparently the birds are doing their part to spread the elderberries. They ate a lot of my crop last year; this year I have found elderberries springing up in other parts of my property where there were definitely no elderberries last year. Not so nice, those damned thistles I let bloom because they were so beautiful even though you all told me not to? I have thistles EVERYWHERE...

A volunteer okra this year at the community garden. It is a freaky looking okra. Very fat short pods on a short plant. There are volunteer tomatoes here and there all over the place, also volunteer tomatillos.

I have never had so many volunteer tomatoes! And none of them are cherries! Dad also has a lot, so the groundhog probably did us a favor by eating 50 of the seedlings I grew for him! I took dad 24 of my volunteers before he knew he had so many! Silver lining to every cloud I say. (

I usually have a lot of tomato volunteers and this year I only have seen 3 or 4 of them. I have a lot of cilantro though and some kind of vine. Either a pumpkin or a squash. Only one female bloom so far.
