It seems like it's taking forever for anything to come through, but then I think that peeps talk about the 4th of July as an early day for the first tomato, and I think maybe I'm more on track than I think I am? www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-dates/IL/Chicagothis chart was pretty interesting for checking if I was "on time" or not... it does note beginning to harvest tomatoes beginning of June, so - I am behind. Very sad to walk out the door and nothing to harvest!

Much to consider with such charts. As far as tomatoes go it's not unusual for me to have ripe tomatoes to harvest by June first...if growing cherry tomatoes like Sun-Gold or Black Cherry or even patio tomatoes, but I no longer grow cherry tomatoes. I grow large slicers! Most years I get my first ripe tomatoes right around the 4th of July. The earliest was a couple years ago when I had my first ripe Brandywine the last week of June. I'm hoping to beat that this year or at least tie it. Don't let such charts get you down, there are just so many variables. Every year is different. In the meantime enjoy other crops. Spinach, beets, Swiss Chard and other greens, cabbage, lettuce, Pak Choi, etc...but like all of us, looking forward to that first ripe tomato. Enjoy! Camo

Wishing for tomatoes here too. But I seem to plant the ones with long maturity rates. Oh well. The sooner they come, the sooner I will have to do something with them!

Don't forget that we have our Fall garden to look forward to and there's less bugs then too!
I bought bacon on sale today in anticipation of BLT's but I'll probably put it in the freezer until I have tomatoes.

I seldom get a tomato in July, August is when my harvest comes in, and really heavy in September. I eat tomatoes the rest of the year, wishing they tasted like August.

I only get a July tomato if I plant an early variety. But those aren't my favorites, so it's more like August here, too

The cherry tomatoes that are in a pot on the deck will give me red ones in July, but I don't get any from the garden till August.

thanks all! I guess I am not as behind as I thought next year in Jerusalem, Peter! I will have earlier starts, more different starts, and under protection!
