I seem too have succesfully rooted some french tarragon, and I want to try the same with the rosemary and thyme.
With the tarragon, I wasn't really being that 'good'. I harvest a few springs for a recipe, denuded the branch of all the leaves, and then stuck the naked twig into dirt. Looks like 1 out of 4 of them took root.
the rosemary is much slower growing, so I wasn't planning on harvesting for a while, but I wanted to be sure to have a few new plants for next year. with the thyme, I want a lot of plants! I love thyme!
I was thinking of taking a baggie of soil, cutting into a branch about half way and putting that into a baggie till I see roots, then completely detach. I had seen this technique with I think roses.
Worth a try? Any tips or experiences to report?

I only have experience with rosemary. I don't stick the cuttings directly into dirt, but I place them in a jar full of water. Once I see that some roots are growing, I transplant in a pot with dirt.
I grow thyme from seeds. I have so much of it from just a few seeds that now an entire (small) bed is taken up by thyme. The thing with thyme is that it must be kept moist until it sprouts and for a little while after that. But once it takes roots there is no limit to how far it'll spread.

I have been relatively unsuccessful with thyme in the past. i had 4 plants that never really thrived and then disappeared. I have one I planted from seed this january that is doing well, but safety in numbers....
when you say spread - does it propagate itself? branches on the ground rooting?

I grow tarragon and thyme. They are perennial herbs that spread each year. They can actually get way bigger than I want and need.
I just divide them when I want more plants.

My thyme is a huge batch, it is really spreading fast. Took it a couple years to get going, and started with only one plant. It is easily 3 x 4 ft. Princess loves to lay in it once the fence is down.

mums, funny about princess - delicious smelling dog my thyme grows great here in a pot, gets bigger every year. I think I planted it from a start from the nursery, it's in a big pot at the CG and has quadrupled in 1 year. this year I completely hacked it back to sticks, and it's doing fine. I can seem to get terrigon happy, I've planted it 3 different times from starts - I don't know what it wants - shade, no shade, sun, partial, I've tried everything... (well, I haven't tried putting it at the cg...) Never thought about the cutting idea. the dirt bag sounds like a good plan... hahhahah "dirt bag"

lol! maybe I should just leave it on it's own then! that sounds plenty! Rosemary won't overwinter here, so that I will need to do cutting of each year for the next garden....
