My older brother called to check on me...I think he called to brag. He says that he has tomatoes that are baseball size and his sweet corn is starting to tassel. He lives about 30 miles south of me. Not only is he going to have the first ripe tomato in town, he may have the first sweet corn. This is the guy who puts his tomatoes under glass, kept warm by Christmas lights.

Hahahaha,
Well, my corn is tasseling and silking as of today...............
But my tomatos are a LONG way from baseball size!
You might remember I cheat and start my corn inside to transplant. It does work.

I noticed my first flowers on my tomatoes today.....I do have some small tomatoes on one of the starts I purchased because my seeded ones were behind...
Never done corn....maybe....someday.

My first planting of corn has tasseled and silks come out a few days ago. We have been getting maters since my other post about BLTs for supper one night. More maters coming. Green beans pulled out (tired of them for now) and more corn planted. Cukes are setting on and squash has finally been blooming...going crazy with blooms. Bell peppers are setting more on and I have a couple of little purple peppers on the ornamental pepper plants...volunteer this year.

I'm still pinching off flowers on the toms and chiles. They're still getting established and are too small. I just got them in the ground a little over 2 weeks ago.
patience patience....

I can't even imagine living somewhere that you can have tomatoes and green beans in June. Northern Illinois isn't working for me right now.

Finally a few sugar snap peas! Just enough to snack on. Blossoms on maters, one little yellow banana pepper forming. Things are looking up! Pole beans are starting to "pole".

Mumsey, our gardens are on the same schedule. I have been picking some strawberries. That is the ones that don't have bites in them. It must be those little ground squirrels. Kaner has pretty much scared the rabbits out and the berries have bites in them not pecks like a bird.

Does everybody pinch off their flowers from the tomatoes in the beginning? Once they are in the ground I don't do pinching. Should I be? Some of mine are small but have flowers. Some are bigger and don't have flowers yet.

I don't pinch tomatoes. I have pinched peppers in the past. I pinch the strawberries too.

I just figure that when they are small and first in the ground the energy is best used to root the plant and get it growing and not into flowers and fruit production.
Maybe it's not necessary, but it just makes sense to me.

Never pinched tomatoes, they grow so quickly they don't need it. Perhaps you can prune out tomato suckers for a while, just to let them get established faster, or to shape them into a single-stem plant.
