DILL. I try and try, but nothing happens. I usually try Mammoth, but this year I've gone with Mammoth and Dukat. Scattered on top of the soil, kept moist. And nothing happening. We use dill by the handful, and want our own fresh leaf. Argh!
SPINACH. Had enough so far this season from a few small plants for a couple of salads. I guess I get it out too late. Or something. Double argh!

Dill is a hard to get rid of self-seeder here! My previous community garden is a full carpet of the stuff on half the plot! Will get a pic if someone hasn't taken the plot.
Try Perpetual Spinach. It doesn't bolt like spinach. It just keeps going and going and going. It's not a true spinach, but still very good.

Try priming your spinach seeds. We have a thread on that here somewhere. It was recommended and I tried it this year with great results. I have more spinach than I have ever had.
Here's notes on how to do it:
Soak seeds for 2 days, dry at room temp for 1-2 days, store in sealed container in a cool place for up to 5 days. Plant.
It really worked. Apparently the soaking activates some cells inside the seed and they start to develop even though you allow the seed to dry. I got almost 100% germination and it only took about 5 days. I will definitely do this again when I plant spinach.
Dill self seeds here too and my smaller garden is full of it. It's somewhat weird because I never planted dill in that garden but I just left it there and planted around it because I just love the smell and the black swallowtail butterflies take advantage of it.

I don't have good luck with Dill. Each spring I try again. I planted a lot of seeds and nothing so far....

I've had a hard time getting dill going from seed, but if I plant one start from the nursery, then it reseeds profusely and I never have to think about planting dill ever again.

Checked out the community garden, someone has tilled it all under. But it will return, with a VENGEANCE!

I have self sowing dill too. It's everywhere. This is the first year I've had really nice spinach. Didn't do anything different than any other year. Maybe it was the cool damp spring.

I had trouble with dill over the last couple years. I don't know what I am doing differently this year but I got several started indoors. And last year I bought some starts and planted some in a couple containers with cucumber and it is coming back in one. Why not both? I don't know!

interesting!
I purchased some dill from the bulk bins at the health food store, planted that in the CG flower bed - i'll report back. I know it will grow here, because someone else had it growing in the past.
yah, it does seem like the weed sort of variety... (well, so many thing are, I mean look at mother nature! nobody plants her stuff! or does a thing to it!)
did you know chard gets over 5' fee high!? oh my goodness, my CG neighbor has some over wintered (I do too actually) and it's like a small tree! i'll take a pic next time.

I've never heard of priming the spinach but will try it.
My frustrating plants have been carrots - just couldn't get to grow. But I'll still try someday.
I've also been frustrated by direct seeded hollyhocks and delphiniums. When we lived in another city, we always had rows of hollyhocks along one border. I can still picture them, and have always wanted to have these beauties from childhood in my own garden.

Chard 5 feet tall????? What??? Are you sure it's chard and not burdock or some other weed? This I gotta see.

I can't grow decent carrots either. Actually I CAN grow them and they look beautiful but they have no taste so I just gave up on carrots and I buy them. Something lacking in my soil I guess because I have tried several times with different varieties and had the same results.
