I've primarily grown pie pumpkins in the past, had some squash vine borer problems, but the biggest problem is the raccoons. One year they chomped on and ruined about 25% of my wonderful crop of 28 adorable pie pumpkins. I think they live in the zoo and come out weekly, especially during harvest season, to explore and do their own grocery shopping from local gardens.
Still, I'm going to try again. This year I'd like to try some of the ornamentals, like Lumina, as well as Connecticut field pumpkins for decoration. I'm hoping the raccoons will be tempted by the larger pumpkins and leave the pie pumpkins alone. Fingers crossed!
I just love the color of fall pumpkins.
There was one Victory Garden episode in which the host asked Amy Goldman to help arrange a variety of pumpkins and squashes around a doorstep. The colors were so rich and varied, the flowers added a wonderful complement, and the whole scene so beautiful that I remember and think of it frequently as one of the wonderful aspects of the Fall harvest.

Haven't grown pumpkins since 2012. Am I forgetting that they start out yellow? I can't remember, but I thought they start out green? Gees, maybe my saved seeds crossed with something? Not from my yard, but from somewhere? We had bees back then. None now. I had to hand pollenate this puppy. This is the planting at the moment: This one will be ready to pollinate in the morning:

That is the color of a butternut squash and the bottom one is a gourd. I'm not so sure that you will get pumpkins.

Am I going to BOO HOO this project! Cripes. The Bees in 2012 must have come from another neighborhood, because I never saw anything growing in this hood that would have been considered an issue! Well, the grandbabies will have to carve a STRANGE Puppy for Halloween! (

I grow sugar pie pumpkins every year. Those are definitely not pumpkins. Pumpkins do, indeed, start out green and round.

We're growing sugar pumpkins for bread and my son's wonderful pies. His pies taste better than mine! So I'll grow the pumpkins and he can supply the dessert.

Had a false start with with my pie pumpkins. Long Island Cheese is my fave. Am I too late for Halloween with the Howdens if I plant now? Used to hear no later than Memorial Day.

You might make it for Halloween. I think that most pumpkins have 90 - 100 DTM.
LA, gourds make nice decorations too but I would plan on buying the pumpkins.
Don't forget that bees forage over a 2 mile radius!

Red, at this point, Who the heck knows, but I ain't ripping them out, gonna let them be. I assume they will still need 100 days till harvest, even though they are WHATEVER'S? Since one parent was a Howden pumpkin? Questions, always questions! Thank Goodness!

I'm testing a trick Pea is teaching me to put pics side by side: The pumpkin cross is putting on more mutants, but I am focusing on the first one, that is changing from yellow to orange, but not getting much bigger, and the mildew vine. I hope they show up side by side:

Hey Pea,
Thanks! Learned a NEW trick!
Great for comparing things side by side.
This might work good for comparing tomatos.
