Hi,
Upon arrival at the CG yester, I found this going on with almost all the onions, and there are 3 kinds, in 3 beds, with different soils, the only thing they have in common is that they overwintered.
the 3 pulled up and laying down had no leaves left to 'grow' them with, so I pulled them
within the last 2 weeks, I have pulled off the flower sprout or scape off any one that had one
well, I guess I didn't put the pic of the ones I pulled up, they basically didn't make a bulb

I'm thinking if they overwintered, then this second year they make seed. I've never had any luck with ones that overwintered, just pull them to eat at table onion stage. That's my experience anyway.

That's my experience anyway. Mine too. They bloom and make seed the second year.

well, yes, I get that part, and this is my 3rd year doing the over winter thing, so it's not new,
what's this fungus, stuff that seems to be rotting the leaves???

well, I guess i'll just trust this is a one time thing -
I wonder if it was something in that !#%@! cold compost we put in last year (that had all the bugs and weeds)

Anytime I accidentally overlooked an onion in the garden, when I find it in the spring if there is a bulb still attached it is rotted.

No idea! Sometimes I get a bulb from an accidentally over-wintered one, but mostly they're compost. Not sure what's with the rotting leaves on yours! I'd compost them.

I didn't respond cause I didn't have any idea what it was.
However, check them often now cause they may still not make bulbs...just dig away a little at the bottom. I had a few like that this spring...I used them sorta like leeks...it worked! Mine were all red onions....so NO MORE red onions for me!
