I posted about the Asian hornet a while back, but I'm not too concerned about them here. These are just a newbie to me. We have Cicada Killers and other big wasps around, but I haven't seen these before. Saw a couple of Velvet Ants ("Cow-Killers") today. Harmless, and beneficial wingless wasps...as long as you don't pick them up. They'll sting the fire out of ya.

I haven't noticed a decline here. Mosquito's are plentiful and the bees too.In fact I've seen more butterflies in the garden than usual. Iโm seeing a normal amount of bees and butterflies, just not all the other kinds of flying insects. We normally have a LOT of flying grasshoppers, but I've yet to see one of those, and only one regular hopper. That's extremely unusual! As for mosquitoes, theyโre about as rare here as a drop of rain. If thereโs such a thing as mosquito hell, the Escalante desert is it.

A record few tick bites this year, in spite of many of them around. Now, you might think that's not fair because I'm off the ground on wheels, but I'm always brushing through tree and bush branches, and tall grass. I used to get them constantly, but not so much lately. I did get a lovely saddleback caterpillar sting a while back, while brushing through the blueberry branches. Them buggers will sting the ever-lovin' fire out of you, on contact.

My son in law found an underground wasp nest in the gravel between large pieces of slate on the sidewalk. They left a huge hole of an entrance...like a mole might leave. The wasps were HUGE...and aggressive...he had to use a spray in the evening...they were attacking anyone who stepped on the sidewalk. So strange.

Big hole under the back walkway. They would attack anyone who came out to the garden. Turned out they were ground hornets. Put a hose in their hole and left it running for a day. That was the end of them.

Anyone seeing a gazillion white flies? They are everywhere, any green plant is full of them. I feel like I am breathing them in! Even on deck plants. They don't bite, good thing. I'm probably not going to try to get rid of them, it would be a never ending job. Touch a plant, and a big cloud of them fly.

Good morning, Mumsey ... I have covered and uncovered kale... Later into the season, white flies found the uncovered kale... I read that spraying water would help to knock them down but as they hang underneath leaves, that would have been a pain, not to mention how much water would be wasted utilized... I just left them... I did not see that they had done damage to the leaves as the harlequin bugs did... A couple days ago, I cut back all the kale leaves, leaving the plants to continue growth, so we'll see if the white flies come back... I have not noticed them on any other plants out there...yet...

Not only are they in the veggie garden, but they are in the flower garden, harassing the dahlias. I'm not seeing damage, but they are annoying. I may wear a mask when I start kale harvest.

Bougainvillea -- if I remember correctly -- draws them. Neem oil is supposed to work for whiteflies, but I've never tried it. The only thing I've had them bad on is collards. I haven't noticed any this year.

tom ๐, There are so many it would be useless to try and spray. I go out early in the morning when it's cool, before they start congregating on everything. I started seeing them in the garden a couple weeks ago.

Don't have a problem with whiteflies here, KOW, but I might have them out there - there is something small and white on my rosemary that I see every time I brush up against them, to get the aroma on my hand, or harvest some - a bunch of those will fly off of the plants, but immediately go back onto the plants. They don't seem to have any damage from these bugs, given the way they grow! Maybe it is something else, but whatever it is, it loves rosemary, and I don't see it on anything else.
I got some of those yellow sticky traps for white flies way back, when I thought I might be having problems with them indoors, but it turned out to be something else. I should put one of those up by the rosemary, and see if it traps any of these things.

Whiteflies get my rosemary every year. Iโm not successful overwintering any plants because of them. Itโs crazy. I even u sed neem before bringing them in...then I forgot to water them๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ

Walking-stick on the front door this evening, about 5 inches long in the body. Wanted to come inside, but shooed back out:

Saw a straggler JB on marigolds. The no-see-ums are still a formidable army out there! Any outdoor work has to be done before 9:30 a.m.
