.... 17 days until Winter Solstice. One of my favorite days of the year (along with the day Daylight savings starts) Soon after I start to feel expansive again.

I'm aware it's arrived but things are usually so hectic this time of the year. This year it is kiddo's last day of school so we'll be doing a little celebrating I'm sure. Honestly I'd like to get in a few weeks of hibernation before seed starting time.

I've been following a woman on Facebook that lives on Svalbard, which is an island near the north pole. They are in their polar nights right now. Can you imagine living in total darkness for 3 months?

I have no idea why (except maybe for increasing age), but for some bizarre reason it seems to be "dense" darker a lot earlier than ever before. I realize that that's doubtfully possible, but I've never before felt how very early this year seems to plunge into total darkness. Like 4:30 p.m. as opposed to what used to be 5:30.

breezygardener, I know the feeling. I had two things I wanted to accomplish before dark. One was garden hose scrub the last of the dahlia tubers. The other was to take pictures of my old golf cart. I wanted to wait for softer light for the pics, but within minutes darkness had set in . I’ll have to try in the morning before the sun gets too bright.

I'm looking forward to it as it marks the end of school for kiddo and the beginning of a much needed break for me. Also looking forward to the daylight increasing too.

I’m with breezy, 4:30 comes and the night routine of closing curtains and turning on light begins. I’m not sure I could adjust well with no sun for months.

Today's the day. Yay! Gotta wait until 12/23 to get some seconds back, but I get 4 of them at once.

It's here. Really the start of a new year. I tend to think everything gets better from here. Not that it's been bad, just dark. It's still too early to plant zinnia seeds however.

Ahhh- daylight is now 4 minutes longer, overall. Interestingly, it's all at the evening end. The mornings are still getting shorter (sunrise is several minutes later since Solsticel) and will until mid January. Then the longer days start getting serious, from both ends.

I know, it is getting exciting that we have past the shortest day and now gaining daylight. I have my list of the early starts and will begin reviewing this week.
