About a year ago, the USDA launched an effort asking people to register their gardens and growing operation with something called The People's Garden project.
Did any of your register your home garden or business growing operation and what the requirements and obligations were for being part of it.
Had someone who helps with a garden ask me about it not long ago so was wondering what it was about. If any of you participate, can you let us know what it requires? Thanks

It’s not for backyard gardens. I’m out.

I loved the idea of it, when I first read about it, but I don't qualify either. Personal gardens at private residences are excluded.

Being the skeptic I am, I would never willingly register my garden for anything. Who knows, maybe eventually a data base for taxing us on food we grow (cutting out the middle man who we don’t buy from.)
Maybe I’m way out there but the thought occurred to me.

Thanks for your responses. I saw the website last year but wasn’t clear what those who register were being asked to do, by signing up what requirements or obligations they must do. The person who asked me is affiliated with a small community garden and she didn’t want to register if they couldn’t meet a certain level for donations of the produce.

maybe eventually a data base for taxing us on food we grow Most states do not tax food. Some tax junk food like soda and chips, or restaurant foods. The federal government does not tax food, either. They do tax our incomes. You will also notice that vegetable seeds are not taxable either, while flowers might be. Don't let this keep you awake at night. Found the following about "grocery tax": "seven states charge a standard sales tax rate on groceries and six impose reduced levies. This year, Kansas, Virginia, Illinois, Idaho, and Tennessee either eliminated or reduced sales taxes on groceries.May 10, 2023" money.com/states-sales-tax-groceries-diapers-period-products/#:~:text=While%20groceries%20are%20exempt%20from,reduced%20sales%20taxes%20on%20groceries.

People's gardens are mostly community type gardens, projects or small scale operations. They can provide food to a comunity as well as training and jobs. The USDA basically provides them with expert advice.

gardendmpls, No tax on food in Iowa either. It's just the skeptic in me! Always new ways of taxing this and that. Nope, not losing sleep over it!

No tax on food in Iowa either. It's just the skeptic in me! I agree. I wasn't worried about taxes, but I would not willingly sign up for any sort of national registry like that. I suspect someone, somewhere would come up with some way of using my information that I wouldn't like.

I would not willingly sign up for any sort of national registry like that It is a registry for community gardens, projects and agricultural endeavors to help communities. I am sure there are similar lists of zoos or parks or animal shelters to facilitate their getting and giving advice and help. Not everything is sinister. The government has plenty of legitimate ways to get info about you, for example, your income tax forms. On the other hand, with some governmental agencies using their powers to make people afraid to speak their minds, maybe we need to be more careful of what information we give to whom.

Not everything is sinister. Obviously. The simple truth is that some people value their privacy far more than others. Think Facebook etc. In this day and age I'd rather be more careful and err on the side of caution. YMMV.
