get to the 3- yes 3- bing cherries when they ripen, before the birds do! I also had 3 Bing cherries on my tree this year! Next year should be better, as I will have a full complement of cherry trees in the orchard. Even a handful of blossoms on a new tree will help.

I’d like to win the war with moles/voles. Does anyone in your area build and keep owl nests? I have two neighbors who do and their owls have put a deep dent into my gopher problem. If I'm recalling correctly, I've only had to set one trap this year. !!!

gianna, we’ve had owls until recently. Something has changed. We don’t hear them, rarely see them. I think it’s the neighbors target practicing that caused them to leave our area.

Have you considered putting up your own owl box on your property opposite from your neighbors? Maybe there just isn't a good place for them to nest nearby. You would have to look up what your best hunting local owls are, or call a local birding group and ask, or natural history museum, and then find a either a design for a box they would like, or maybe someone locally builds them, like here. Check out Craig's list, etc. Out of curiosity, I just looked on Amazon, and they sell different designs for owl boxes/nests' too. If there already weren't two (and maybe more) owl boxes very close, I'd consider hiring someone to put one up on my property too.

My garden goals this year would be to really up my game when it comes to veggie gardening - I want to try out all kinds of different veggies and herbs, maybe even some exotic ones! I also wanna get some nice flowers planted to make the whole thing look sweet. And of course, I wanna be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor and chow down on some home-grown veggies!

Let me add.... get to the 3- yes 3- bing cherries when they ripen, before the birds do! I hope you were successful. Time to assess what needs to be done as the time remaining in summer gets shorter. I think most seed sowing is done, except for a few successions such as sunflowers and cilantro. Cauliflower plants need planting. And then there is the harvest and preserving things - tomatillos, tomatoes, peppers, and the last of the peaches. Last year with 30 inches of rain, lots of weeds and shrubs grew. Lots! And many of this summer's tasks have been dealing with all that growth. It still is. And with a strong El Nino predicted (we usually get lots of rain), I want to be better prepared for fall/winter this year for less work next year. I want the paths to be totally clear, and this year, cover them with landscape fabric. I used some last year and it worked very well. I want beds thick mulched to suppress weeds too. So that's my main late summer goal... to get ready for winter while still enjoying the bounty of summer.
