Saw an ad for this portable bug zapper. Reviews seem great, kills mosquitoes (it's main selling point), as well as other nuisance insects. But I can't find anywhere that mentions beneficial insects. I would think this would be a bad thing! They use scare tactics like mosquito borne diseases as a selling point.
Any thoughts?

Depends on what they use to attract the bugs. Some are attracted to sound, some to UV light, some to pheremones (moths and Japanese beetles) and some to CO2 (mosquitoes).

Did a little research. It uses UV light and is very overpriced. You might like this scam expose' video which points out that the advertizing shows a hospital room sterilizer that uses UV light and relates it to the mosquito zapper, two totally different things. You can see people in protective "space suits" in the background. This video also points out that if you want this type of bug zapper, you can get the identical one for $11. as opposed to $20.-$40. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOZ8hBsuepU

gardendmpls, I was thinking it was a scam of sorts. A red flag is when during the ad, the person is said to have "teamed up" with some highly titled person to formulate this product. Thanks for finding the video!

I never use any type of "bug zapper" because they do always kill beneficials. Anything drawn to the light gets zapped.

I'm satisfied with the phoebes, bluebirds, dragonflies, the few bats, and even hummingbirds for flying insect control. They don't get them all, but they make a difference.

Oddly enough, even with our summer heat & humidity, it's rare that we're bothered by mosquitoes or gnats, etc. day or evening. If/when we do, we light good old-fashioned unscented "punk sticks", which work very well at keeping these no-see-ums at bay. A blast from the past of my childhood, & still as effective as ever.
