So I made a compost pile last summer and left it over winter. I finally took a look at it this year when I went to use it. It looks like I had something growing in it. I've no idea what it is. It wasn't much, just a few sprouts that looked like bean sprouts or something or may be a weed of some sort, some had a bud on the end. That was my first ever compost pile so I have no experience with this sort of thing. I just want to make sure that it is safe to use for this year.

I would just turn it a few times which should be done every few days anyway.

I agree. Just turn it over a few times which, as lilolpeapicker stated - you should have been doing occasionally anyway throughout the winter, assuming the pile wasn't frozen solid or covered with snow.

I've always got something sprouting in my compost pile. I just turn it under, unless it's a pumpkin.

Yup, things sprout in my compost pile, as well. I don't give it a second thought other than if it's something I want I'll transplant it or even just leave it to grow in the pile. If I don't want to grow it I pull it and then leave in the pile to break down. I don't turn my pile very often- so I've had some vigorous plants grow out of it.

I am glad you asked this as I thought the same thing yesterday and wanted to ask as well and felt stupid. Not that I thought it was stupid. Ha ha.

My compost pile generally sits all winter without any turning and I just pull out anything growing in it when I put it on the garden. Last year's compost is full of jewelweed seeds and I go back and pull the seedlings after they sprout and put them in this year's pile. Of course had I kept the jewelweed away from the outside of the compost bin it probably wouldn't have been an issue.

As far as it being "safe", unless it smells funky (anaerobic), it is safe to use on plants.
