Hello,
I would like to sow some flowers now but feel out of my element as, I my garden passion is mostly for what I can eat, but I would like to try. I like things such as: stock, salvia, snapdragons... The area I will work in is rather small and ideally would like some perennials and things that would grow tall enough, for a not so tall vase, if I decide to get snippy. I do realize, it's too late for the snapdragons...but any flower recommendations with a similar vibe, would be greatly appreciated.
I did, plant a bunch of borage last year, which is getting wild, which is fine by me as it attracted so many pollinators!
Thanks,
alpacasock

Zinnias, marigolds, calendulas, asters, stock, gladiolas and lots of others. Am trying out a lot more this year as my interests shift. Cutting back on "show off" vegetables like giant tomatoes in weird colors of which you only get two or three per plant after waiting until October. Next year I could give you a better answer. Planting my gladiolas soon. They look good in a vase.

Something I planted last year for the first time was Mexican Sunflowers. I've never been one to grow many flowers - only food - but I also had some zinnias, because I had gotten free seeds 2 years in a row! lol And I heard that the Mexican Sunflowers attracted a lot of pollinators, and it turned out to be true! Zinnias did well, but these did great! Attracted a lot of butterflies, in addition to all the bees, and something I didn't get a photo of, but saw a number of times - hummingbirds. Never saw these elsewhere. They are messy, however, and blossoms don't last long, and need cleaned off. I'm planting 4 behind my shed this year, so they are near the garden - zinnias are out front this season First Mexican Sunflower, 6-25 by pepperhead212, on Flickr Swallowtail on a Mexican Sunflower. by pepperhead212, on Flickr

I think flowers are every bit as important as produce- they're food for the soul, not to mention drawing in pollinators. You could also consider growing flowers that you can eat then you'd be combining your passion for growing food with the beauty of flowers.
Day lilies are edible as are nasturtiums, french marigolds, hollyhocks, sunflowers (seeds and flowers), cornflowers and so many more!

Thanks for all of the suggestions- will look into these. I do like how cornflowers look (for example) and my favorite Earl Grey tea includes them. I grow borage in part to eat or use as a garnish, it tastes a bit like cucumber, which is a vegetable whose taste I am not that fond of.
