And I am heart broken. It is my friend. I've had it for at least 35 years. It is a sturdy life long tool.
So I'm going to need to buy a new one. What are you all using? Suggestions for what to buy greatly appreciated. I looked at the garden centers while in town today. Was not impressed. Cheap, flimsy tools that look like they will break in a season or two.

That’s amazing that a shovel lasted 35 years! If you remember the brand, please let us know. It’s hard to find quality tools like that these days. I tend to break a lot of shovels and other tools. It’s also really humid where I live so they rot fairly quickly especially since I don’t care for them well. I like to find cool old tools at the flea market

I once found the kitchen sink strainer in the compost pile…as I was harvesting…a year after I had purchased a replacement. Did you use your shovel at the house in town? You were helping a neighbor with yard work? You were working on cleaning your water delivery system/ditch. Might it be in the ditch? Did you check the inside of the vehicles? Come on folks, let’s find DW’s shovel…

raphanus, It was from Smith and Hawkens mail order. They have closed their retail stores and supposedly still sell online but I couldnt track one down last night , when searching. It wasn't cheap but was so worth it. I would have spent that much, and more, on cheaper replacements over the years. One of the important lessons I learned from hub- don't skimp on tools. I saw one at Gardeners Supply Company that's a close replicate. Thinking about it. $39 ash wood handle. Great reviews.

I once found the kitchen sink strainer in the compost pile I'm still waiting for a good pair of sunglasses to reappear- 3 years later. They are somewhere in the garden. Did you use your shovel at the house in town? You were helping a neighbor with yard work? You were working on cleaning your water delivery system/ditch. Might it be in the ditch? Did you check the inside of the vehicles? I don't take it with me to town or neighbor's. And I haven't used it yet, this season., so it was already missing for ditch cleanup. The last time I remember using it was last November. I take hand tools with me on our road trip to California, to clean my parent's and a sister's graves. And I remember unloading it from the car when we got home. I could have used it after that , just don't remember. Now I'm thinking it might have fallen into a crevice. It's here somewhere. And if I buy a replacement it will probably show up as soon as I use the new one!

I’ve lost a pair of garden scissors. Actually had been using them in the basement since January but suddenly they are MIA. I have another older pair in garage.

And why do I always lose one glove?

Probably because you always use just one glove, like I did today.

And why do I always lose one glove? It happens to me when I have to take probably the right hand, for me, to do something without the glove.

I like to find cool old tools at the flea market Most of my garden tools I've purchased over the years at yard sales. Some quite nice. I picked up an old compost fork with very heavy metal tines, half an inch apart, for one dollar, just because. I can hardly lift it empty. But it's really cool! I'm still waiting for a good pair of sunglasses to reappear- 3 years later. They are somewhere in the garden. A number of years ago I found a lost, small silver earring in a raised bed. It had been missing for a couple years. I saw a glint and fished it out. Not a hint of tarnish on it, unlike its mate I had fortunately saved.

I'd be lost without my perfect military-style folding shovel of 25 years vintage. Looked for replacement, but they don't make them quite like they used to. Hope you find it, desertwoman

I can identify with losing your hand shovel, desertwoman. I use a short D-handle shovel for harvesting compost. And I was pretty sure that I had put it in the garden shed the last time I used it. It was not to be found. I retraced my travels, even checking the walking path on the back four…just in case it had fallen from my cart. I finally admitted to hubby that “his” shovel was missing. This shovel has a history…when he was a young teen, his father was caretaker at a nearby cemetery. His dad dug the graves and he sometimes helped his dad, using that shovel…that’s the story. After admitting to hubby that I had lost a piece of history, I went back to the garden. In a few minutes, I hear him calling my name. I look up and he’s holding “the shovel” high in the air. “Found it”, says he. “Where was it?” I asked. “What does it matter?” he replied. Well, even though he said that he had not used it for several months, it was on his side of the garage. I don’t go into his side of the garage. Danger lurks in there.
